This course equips learners with a comprehensive understanding of HIV/AIDS, its transmission, prevention, and impact on the workplace. Target Audience

This course is designed for all employees, managers, and HR professionals in South African workplaces who need to understand HIV/AIDS implications and contribute to a healthy, non-discriminatory work environment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Understanding HIV/AIDS

Objectives:
• Define HIV and AIDS and differentiate between them
• Describe the transmission and progression of HIV
• Identify common myths and misconceptions about HIV/AIDS
• Explain the impact of HIV/AIDS on individuals and society

• What is HIV/AIDS?

Day 2: HIV/AIDS and the Law

Objectives:
• Outline key South African legislation related to HIV/AIDS in the workplace
• Explain the role of the Employment Equity Act and the Labour Relations Act
• Describe the rights of employees living with HIV/AIDS
• Understand the concept of reasonable accommodation

• Constitutional rights and HIV/AIDS
• Employment Equity Act (No. 55 of 1998)
• Labour Relations Act (No. 66 of 1995)
• Occupational Health and Safety Act
• Code of Good Practice on HIV/AIDS

Day 3: HIV/AIDS Policy Development

Objectives:
• Identify key components of an effective workplace HIV/AIDS policy
• Develop a draft HIV/AIDS policy for a workplace
• Understand the process of policy implementation
• Discuss stakeholder engagement in policy development

Day 4: HIV/AIDS and Workplace Productivity

Objectives:
• Analyze the impact of HIV/AIDS on employee health and productivity
• Calculate the cost implications of HIV/AIDS to a business
• Discuss absenteeism and presenteeism related to HIV/AIDS
• Identify strategies to mitigate productivity loss

Day 5: HIV/AIDS Prevention and Education Programmes

Day 6: HIV/AIDS Testing, Counselling, and Support

Objectives:
• Explain the importance of voluntary counselling and testing (VCT)
• Describe the role of workplace wellness programmes in HIV support
• Understand the principles of confidentiality and disclosure
• Identify support services for employees living with HIV

Day 7: Managing HIV/AIDS in the Workplace

• Handle grievances and disputes related to HIV/AIDS

Day 8: HIV/AIDS and Stigma Reduction

• Evaluate the impact of HIV/AIDS interventions on business outcomes

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
