Description

This course equips learners with the skills to effectively manage shift handovers in manufacturing operations, ensuring continuity, safety, and productivity. Participants will learn to communicate critical information, document handover procedures, and apply standardised protocols to minimise operational risks.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply standardised handover procedures to ensure seamless transition between shifts.
  • Analyze operational data and communicate critical information during handovers.
  • Evaluate handover documentation for completeness and accuracy.
  • Implement corrective actions based on handover reports to improve operational efficiency.
  • Demonstrate effective communication techniques to resolve handover-related issues.

Target Audience

Designed for production supervisors, team leaders, shift managers, and manufacturing operators responsible for shift handovers in industrial or manufacturing environments.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Effective Shift Handover

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and regulatory requirements of shift handover in manufacturing operations.
• Identify key components of a structured handover process.
• Recognize common handover failures and their impact on safety and productivity.
• Apply communication techniques to ensure clear and complete information transfer.

Topics:
• Introduction to handover management and its importance.
• Regulatory framework: SAQA, OHS Act, and industry standards.
• Elements of a robust handover system: logs, checklists, verbal reports.
• Communication barriers and strategies to overcome them.
• Roles and responsibilities of outgoing and incoming shifts.
• Case studies: consequences of poor handover.
• Introduction to handover documentation tools.

Day 2: Advanced Handover Practices and Integration

Objectives:
• Develop and use standardized handover checklists tailored to specific operations.
• Conduct effective shift handover meetings using structured protocols.
• Evaluate handover quality through feedback and performance indicators.
• Integrate handover procedures into continuous improvement and safety management systems.

Topics:
• Designing checklists for different manufacturing contexts.
• Conducting structured handover briefings: SBAR, ISBAR, or similar models.
• Handling incomplete or ambiguous information.
• Escalation protocols for unresolved issues.
• Auditing and improving handover processes.
• Technology in handover: digital logs and shift handover software.
• Linking handover to incident prevention and operational excellence.
• Practical exercise: simulated handover scenarios.

Practicals

6 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Practical sessions allow learners to apply handover principles in simulated manufacturing environments. Participants practice using checklists, conducting shift briefings, and resolving communication gaps under supervision, reinforcing skills for real-world application.

Practical Activities
  • Handover Documentation Practice — Learners complete and review shift handover logs and checklists based on given scenarios, focusing on accuracy and completeness. (2h)
  • Simulated Shift Handover Briefing — In pairs, learners role-play outgoing and incoming shift leaders, delivering a structured handover using SBAR model in a mock manufacturing setting. (2h)
  • Handover Failure Analysis and Improvement — Groups analyze a recorded (acted) poor handover, identify failures, and propose improvements using a root-cause approach. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
