Description

This course equips learners with the specialised skills required to manufacture paper board and tissue product wrapping materials in a manufacturing environment. Day 1: Introduction to Paper Board Tissue Product Wrapping

Day 2: Wrapping Materials and Their Properties

Objectives:
• Describe the properties and applications of different wrapping materials.
• Select appropriate materials based on product type and customer requirements.

• Identify common material defects and their impact on wrapping quality.

• Polyethylene and polypropylene films: characteristics and uses.
• Paper-based wraps: kraft, waxed, and laminated papers.
• Adhesives: hot melt, cold glue, and pressure-sensitive tapes.
• Material specifications: thickness, strength, sealability.
• Storage conditions: temperature, humidity, shelf life.
• Material inspection and quality checks.

Day 3: Wrapping Machinery Operation and Setup

Objectives:
• Identify main components and functions of wrapping machines.
• Perform basic machine setup and changeovers for different product sizes.
• Adjust machine parameters (speed, temperature, tension) for optimal wrapping.
• Apply start-up and shut-down procedures safely.

• Flow-wrapping machines: infeed, forming, sealing, discharge.
• Shrink wrapping systems: tunnels and sealers.
• Bundlers and case packers for multi-pack wrapping.
• Machine controls: HMI, PLC, sensors.

Day 4: Quality Control and Troubleshooting in Wrapping

• Identify common wrapping defects and their root causes.
• Perform quality checks using inspection tools and gauges.
• Apply corrective actions for defects like wrinkles, leaks, misalignment.
• Document quality data and report non-conformances.

• Common defects: poor seals, wrinkles, tears, misregistration.

• Apply lean manufacturing principles to wrapping operations.

Day 6: Maintenance and Safety for Wrapping Equipment

Objectives:
• Perform routine preventive maintenance tasks on wrapping machines.
• Identify and report safety hazards in the wrapping area.
• Apply lockout/tagout procedures during maintenance.
• Understand the role of maintenance in equipment reliability.

• Preventive maintenance schedules and checklists.
• Cleaning and lubrication of machine parts.

Day 7: Integration, Assessment, and Certification

• Demonstrate competence in wrapping operations through practical assessment.
• Integrate knowledge of materials, machinery, quality, and safety.
• Complete a comprehensive written and practical exam.
• Develop a personal action plan for continuous improvement.

Overview

Hands-on practical sessions allow learners to apply theoretical knowledge to real wrapping machinery. Learners will set up, operate, troubleshoot, and perform basic maintenance on wrapping equipment under supervision, reinforcing skills necessary for the workplace.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Material Handling and Machine Setup — Learners practice handling wrapping materials (films, paper, adhesives) and perform complete machine setup for a standard product size, including loading materials and adjusting machine parameters. (6h)
  • Practical 2: Wrapping Operation and Quality Inspection — Learners operate wrapping machines to produce wrapped products, then inspect output for defects using quality tools. They adjust process parameters to correct common issues. (8h)
  • Practical 3: Changeover and Advanced Techniques — Learners perform a product changeover, adjusting machine for different size and material. They also explore automation features like vision system alignment and robotic interfacing. (6h)
  • Practical 4: Preventive Maintenance and Safety — Learners perform routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning, lubrication, and replacing wear parts. They practice lockout/tagout procedures and identify safety hazards. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
