Perform Masking And De Masking On A Vehicle Training

SAQA US 119742 | NQF 2 | Credits 8 | Duration 5 Days
From $1,242 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the skills to perform masking and de-masking on a vehicle in preparation for spray painting. It covers the selection and application of masking materials, techniques to protect non-paint areas, and safe removal of masking after painting, ensuring a professional finish and compliance with industry standards.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify and select appropriate masking materials and tools for different vehicle surfaces and paint types.
  • Apply masking techniques to protect vehicle areas not to be painted, ensuring clean lines and adhesion.
  • Demonstrate safe and efficient de-masking procedures after painting to avoid damage to the finish.
  • Evaluate the quality of masking work and make adjustments to meet industry standards.
  • Implement workplace health and safety practices during masking and de-masking processes.

Target Audience

This course is intended for spray painters, automotive refinishers, and apprentices in the motor body repair industry who need to develop or refine masking and de-masking skills.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Vehicle Masking and Demasking

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and importance of masking and demasking in vehicle refinishing.
• Identify different types of masking materials and their appropriate uses.
• Learn safety procedures and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
• Recognize common vehicle surface areas that require masking.

Topics:
• Overview of the refinishing process and role of masking/demasking.
• Types of masking tapes, paper, and plastic films.
• Selection criteria for masking materials based on paint type and surface.
• Health and safety regulations (OHS Act, COIDA).
• PPE: gloves, respirators, safety glasses.
• Identifying edges, trim, glass, and other areas to mask.
• Basic surface preparation before masking.

Day 2: Masking Techniques and Application

Objectives:
• Demonstrate correct methods for applying masking tape to straight and curved surfaces.
• Apply masking paper and plastic to cover large areas without contamination.
• Use precision masking for intricate details like emblems and badges.
• Understand the importance of adhesion and avoiding tape lifting.

Topics:
• Techniques for straight-line masking using tape measures.
• Curved masking: cutting and overlapping tape.
• Masking paper application: folding, tucking, and securing.
• Plastic sheeting: draping and sealing with tape.
• Precision masking: using fine line tape for edges and contours.
• Masking off rubber seals, window trims, and door handles.
• Common mistakes: tape bridging, wrinkles, and gaps.
• Quality checks for complete coverage.

Day 3: Demasking Processes and Quality Control

Objectives:
• Perform demasking at the correct time after painting to avoid paint damage.
• Remove masking materials without leaving adhesive residue.
• Inspect painted surfaces for defects and touch-up requirements.
• Follow manufacturer guidelines for demasking of specific paint systems.

Topics:
• Timing of demasking: wet vs. dry paint removal.
• Techniques for peeling tape at a 45-degree angle.
• Removing paper and plastic without disturbing fresh paint.
• Handling adhesive residue: solvents and cleaning agents.
• Inspection for paint runs, sags, overspray, and dust nibs.
• Touch-up and polishing after demasking.
• Documentation of work completed and defects noted.

Day 4: Advanced Masking and Problem Solving

Objectives:
• Apply advanced masking techniques for two-tone paint schemes and graphics.
• Solve common masking problems such as tape bleed and paint lifting.
• Mask complex areas like door jambs, engine bays, and interiors.
• Understand the interaction between masking materials and different paint types.

Topics:
• Two-tone masking: creating sharp lines with fine line tape.
• Masking for stripes, flames, and custom graphics.
• Dealing with tape bleed: burnishing and edge sealing.
• Preventing paint lifting: proper tape removal and surface compatibility.
• Masking for partial repaints: blending techniques.
• Masking non-metal surfaces: plastic, chrome, and glass.
• Troubleshooting common issues: tape residue, paint cracks.
• Adapting to different paint systems (solvent-based, waterborne).

Day 5: Integration, Assessment, and Certification

Objectives:
• Complete a full masking and demasking task on a vehicle panel.
• Demonstrate adherence to industry standards and safety protocols.
• Evaluate work against quality criteria and identify areas for improvement.
• Prepare for unit standard assessment and receive feedback.

Topics:
• Practical assessment: mask and demask a complete vehicle panel.
• Time management and workflow optimisation.
• Peer review and self-assessment checklists.
• Industry standards: NCR, SABS, and manufacturer specifications.
• Environmental considerations: waste disposal of materials.
• Recap of key learning points and Q&A.
• Final assessment and certification guidance.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 30%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 70%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
