This course equips learners with the knowledge to identify and understand computerised systems commonly used in manufacturing and processing environments. Participants will gain insight into how these systems enhance efficiency, quality control, and data management within industrial operations.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of PLC and SCADA Systems

Objectives:
• Understand the role of PLCs and SCADA in industrial automation
• Identify key components of a PLC system
• Explain basic SCADA architecture and communication protocols
• Differentiate between PLC and SCADA functions

Topics:
• Introduction to automation in electrical, water, wastewater, manufacturing, and processing industries
• Overview of PLCs: history, types, and applications
• PLC hardware: CPU, I/O modules, power supply, and communication interfaces
• Introduction to SCADA: components, HMI, RTU, and master station
• Communication protocols: Modbus, Profibus, and OPC
• Safety and standards in automation

Day 2: PLC Programming and Configuration

Objectives:
• Write basic ladder logic programs
• Configure I/O modules and addressing
• Implement timers, counters, and comparison instructions
• Troubleshoot simple PLC programs

Topics:
• Ladder logic programming basics: contacts, coils, branches
• I/O addressing and mapping
• Timers (TON, TOF) and counters (CTU, CTD)
• Comparison and arithmetic instructions
• Program organization: main routine, subroutines
• Hands-on: programming a simple process control sequence

Day 3: SCADA System Design and HMI Development

Objectives:
• Design a basic SCADA HMI screen
• Configure tags and alarms
• Establish communication between PLC and SCADA
• Interpret real-time data trends

Topics:
• HMI design principles: navigation, graphics, and user interface
• Tag database creation and data binding
• Alarm management and logging
• Trend curves and historical data visualization
• Communication setup: PLC to SCADA (e.g., via Modbus TCP)
• Practical: building an HMI for a water pumping station

Day 4: Advanced Applications and Integration

Objectives:
• Implement PID control in PLC programs
• Integrate multiple PLCs with a SCADA system
• Apply data analytics for process optimization
• Understand cybersecurity in automation

Topics:
• PID control: tuning and implementation in PLC
• Networked automation: multiple PLCs and SCADA integration
• Data logging and reporting for compliance
• Cybersecurity basics: network segmentation, access control
• Case studies: water treatment, manufacturing line, wastewater plant

Day 5: Troubleshooting, Maintenance, and Project Work

Objectives:
• Diagnose common PLC and SCADA faults
• Perform routine maintenance on automation systems
• Complete an integrated project from design to commissioning
• Prepare documentation and handover procedures

Topics:
• Fault-finding techniques: using diagnostic tools and software
• Preventive maintenance of PLC and SCADA components
• Project: design, program, and simulate a small automation system
• Documentation: system diagrams, user manuals, and maintenance logs
• Final assessment and Q&A

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house Venue: Windhoek, Namibia
Overview

Practical sessions are integral to this course, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge in hands-on labs. Learners will program PLCs, develop SCADA HMIs, and troubleshoot integrated systems using industry-standard equipment.

Practical Activities
  • PLC Programming and I/O Wiring — Learners wire a simple I/O circuit and write a ladder logic program to control a motor start/stop sequence. (4h)
  • SCADA HMI Development — Learners create an HMI screen for a water tank level control system, including alarms and trends. (4h)
  • PID Control Implementation — Learners implement a PID control loop in a PLC to regulate temperature in a simulated process. (4h)
  • Integrated System Project — Learners work in teams to design, program, and commission a small automation system combining PLC and SCADA. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
