Safe Chemical Handling In Manufacturing Environments Training

SAQA US 110011 | NQF 2 | Credits 5 | Duration 2 Days
From $832 per delegate

Description

This course equips manufacturing employees with the knowledge and skills to safely handle hazardous chemicals in the workplace. Participants will learn to identify chemical hazards, interpret safety data sheets, and apply proper storage, handling, and disposal procedures to minimize risks and comply with South African occupational health and safety regulations.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply the principles of safe chemical handling to prevent incidents and exposures.
  • Identify and interpret chemical hazards using safety data sheets and container labels.
  • Demonstrate correct procedures for the storage, transfer, and disposal of hazardous chemicals.
  • Implement emergency response actions for chemical spills, leaks, and exposures.
  • Evaluate workplace compliance with relevant OHS legislation and company policies.

Target Audience

Designed for production workers, team leaders, and safety representatives in manufacturing environments who handle or are exposed to hazardous chemicals.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Chemical Hazards and Safe Handling Principles

Objectives:
• Identify the physical, health, and environmental hazards associated with chemicals in the workplace.
• Interpret Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and chemical labels to determine required controls.
• Apply the hierarchy of controls to reduce risks from chemical exposure.
• Demonstrate correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE) for handling chemicals.
• Understand emergency response procedures for chemical spills and exposures.

Topics:
• Introduction to chemical safety legislation in South Africa (OHSA, SANS 10228).
• Classification of hazardous chemicals (GHS pictograms, hazard statements).
• Routes of entry and health effects (acute vs. chronic toxicity).
• Safety Data Sheets (SDS): sections and interpretation.
• Labelling requirements and hazard communication.
• Hierarchy of controls: elimination, substitution, engineering, administrative, PPE.
• Selection, use, and care of PPE (gloves, goggles, respirators, aprons).
• Emergency procedures: spills, fires, first aid, and evacuation.

Day 2: Safe Handling Practices, Storage, and Waste Management

Objectives:
• Apply safe work procedures for receiving, transferring, and dispensing chemicals.
• Implement correct storage practices based on chemical compatibility and segregation.
• Develop and use standard operating procedures (SOPs) for chemical tasks.
• Manage chemical waste in compliance with environmental regulations.
• Conduct a basic workplace inspection for chemical safety risks.

Topics:
• Safe handling techniques: decanting, mixing, and transporting chemicals.
• Storage requirements: ventilation, segregation, bunding, and temperature control.
• Incompatible chemicals and storage group classifications.
• Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safe work permits.
• Spill response and containment: use of spill kits and decontamination.
• Chemical waste management: classification, labelling, and disposal.
• Housekeeping and inspection practices for chemical storage areas.
• Review and assessment of knowledge and practical skills.

Practicals

6 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practical sessions allow learners to apply safe chemical handling procedures, use PPE correctly, and respond to simulated spills. These exercises reinforce theoretical knowledge and build competence in real-world scenarios.

Practical Activities
  • PPE Selection and Inspection — Learners practice selecting appropriate PPE for different chemical hazards and inspect equipment for defects. (1h)
  • Safe Decanting and Transfer of Chemicals — Learners perform safe decanting of a liquid chemical from a drum to a smaller container using proper equipment and techniques. (1h)
  • Spill Response and Containment — Learners respond to a simulated chemical spill, using a spill kit to contain and clean up the spill safely. (2h)
  • Chemical Storage and Segregation Exercise — Learners categorise a set of chemical containers and arrange them in a storage area according to compatibility and safety requirements. (1h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
