Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Electrical Theory and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand basic electrical principles including voltage, current, resistance, and power.
• Identify safety protocols and regulations relevant to electrical work in South Africa.
• Explain the relationship between electrical quantities using Ohm's Law and power formulas.
• Recognise common electrical symbols and components used in single-phase circuits.

Topics:
• Introduction to electrical theory: atoms, charge, and conductors.
• Voltage, current, resistance, and power definitions and units.
• Ohm's Law and power calculations (P=VI, V=IR).
• Electrical safety: lockout/tagout, PPE, and SANS 10142.
• Circuit components: resistors, capacitors, inductors, switches.
• Schematic symbols and reading basic circuit diagrams.

Day 2: Single-Phase AC Circuits and Components

Objectives:
• Describe the characteristics of alternating current (AC) and single-phase systems.
• Analyse AC circuits with resistive, inductive, and capacitive loads.
• Calculate impedance, power factor, and phase angles.
• Test and measure AC circuit parameters using multimeters.

Topics:
• AC waveform: frequency, amplitude, RMS values.
• Single-phase supply: live, neutral, earth.
• Impedance in RLC circuits: series and parallel.
• Power factor and its correction.
• Using multimeters for AC voltage, current, and resistance measurement.
• Practical exercise: building and measuring a simple AC circuit.

Day 3: Refrigeration Principles and Components

Objectives:
• Explain the basic refrigeration cycle and its thermodynamic principles.
• Identify key components: compressor, condenser, expansion valve, evaporator.
• Understand the role of refrigerants and their environmental impact.
• Perform basic pressure and temperature measurements in a refrigeration system.

Topics:
• Refrigeration cycle: compression, condensation, expansion, evaporation.
• Thermodynamics: heat transfer, latent heat, superheat, subcooling.
• Refrigerant types, R-134a, R-290, and regulations (F-gas).
• Compressor types: reciprocating, rotary, scroll.
• Pressure-enthalpy diagrams.
• Practical: using manifold gauges and thermometers.

Day 4: Air Conditioning Systems and Controls

Objectives:
• Differentiate between various air conditioning system types (split, window, packaged).
• Interpret wiring diagrams for single-phase air conditioning units.
• Troubleshoot common electrical faults in AC systems using multimeters.
• Apply load calculations for residential cooling.

Topics:
• Types of AC systems: split, multi-split, window, ducted.
• Electrical wiring: compressor contactor, fan relays, capacitors.
• Thermostats and control circuits.
• Troubleshooting: compressor start/run issues, capacitor testing.
• Heat load calculation basics.
• Practical: wiring a split AC unit control circuit.

Day 5: Ventilation Systems and Integration

Objectives:
• Understand ventilation principles and indoor air quality standards.
• Install and wire ventilation fans and control systems.
• Integrate ventilation with HVAC systems for optimal performance.
• Perform airflow measurements and adjustments.

Topics:
• Ventilation types: natural, mechanical, hybrid.
• Fans: axial, centrifugal, and controls.
• Ductwork basics and air balancing.
• Integration with AC: economizers, heat recovery.
• Indoor air quality: CO2 sensors, humidity control.
• Practical: wiring a ventilation fan with timer and speed control.

Day 6: System Integration, Fault Finding, and Final Assessment

Objectives:
• Combine refrigeration, AC, and ventilation into a complete system.
• Diagnose and rectify complex electrical faults in integrated systems.
• Perform system commissioning and performance checks.
• Prepare for unit standard assessment.

Topics:
• Integrated system wiring: combining AC, refrigeration, and ventilation.
• Advanced fault finding: using schematics and logic.
• Commissioning: start-up procedures, performance verification.
• Preventive maintenance schedules.
• Review of key concepts and practical assessment.
• Final assessment: written and practical tasks.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
