This course provides a comprehensive understanding of the operation and components of basic vapour compression refrigeration systems. Participants will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to identify, describe, and troubleshoot key components such as compressors, condensers, expansion devices, and evaporators. Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Refrigeration and Thermodynamic Principles

Objectives:
• Explain the basic principles of thermodynamics and heat transfer.
• Identify the components of a vapour compression refrigeration system.
• Describe the refrigeration cycle and its phases.
• Understand the role of refrigerants and their properties.
• Apply safety procedures when handling refrigerants.

• Overview of refrigeration and its applications
• Basic thermodynamics: heat, temperature, pressure, and enthalpy
• The vapour compression refrigeration cycle: evaporation, compression, condensation, expansion
• Refrigerants: types, properties, and environmental considerations
• Safety precautions and handling of refrigerants
• Introduction to system components: compressor, condenser, expansion device, evaporator

Day 2: Compressors and Condensers – Operation and Maintenance

Objectives:
• Differentiate between types of compressors and their applications.
• Explain the operation and function of condensers.
• Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting on compressors and condensers.
• Identify common faults and their causes.
• Apply safety practices during maintenance.

• Types of compressors: reciprocating, rotary, screw, centrifugal
• Compressor construction, lubrication, and cooling
• Compressor performance and capacity control
• Condenser types: air-cooled, water-cooled, evaporative
• Condenser operation, heat rejection, and maintenance
• Common compressor and condenser faults: overheating, oil issues, refrigerant leaks
• Practical exercise: compressor and condenser inspection

Day 3: Expansion Devices and Evaporators – Control and Efficiency

Objectives:
• Describe the function and types of expansion devices.
• Explain evaporator types and their role in heat absorption.
• Adjust and troubleshoot expansion devices for optimal performance.
• Understand superheat and subcooling and their measurement.
• Apply energy efficiency principles in evaporator operation.

Topics:
• Expansion devices: thermostatic expansion valves, capillary tubes, electronic expansion valves
• Expansion device selection and adjustment
• Evaporator types: dry expansion, flooded, plate, finned
• Evaporator heat transfer and defrost methods
• Superheat and subcooling: measurement and significance
• Energy efficiency in evaporators: frosting, airflow, and load matching
• Practical exercise: setting superheat on a TXV

Day 4: System Controls, Accessories, and Troubleshooting

Objectives:
• Identify system controls and safety devices.
• Explain the function of accessories such as receivers, accumulators, and filters.
• Diagnose common system faults using pressure and temperature readings.
• Perform systematic troubleshooting on a refrigeration system.
• Apply correct procedures for refrigerant recovery and charging.

Topics:
• Controls: thermostats, pressure switches, solenoid valves, controllers
• Safety devices: high-pressure cut-out, low-pressure cut-out, oil pressure switch
• Accessories: liquid receivers, suction accumulators, filter-driers, sight glasses
• System diagnostics: using gauges, thermometers, and data loggers
• Common faults: low/high head pressure, refrigerant shortage, contamination
• Refrigerant recovery, evacuation, and charging procedures
• Practical exercise: troubleshooting a simulated system fault

Day 5: System Integration, Commissioning, and Practical Assessment

Objectives:
• Commission a vapour compression refrigeration system from start-up.
• Perform performance tests and adjust controls for optimal operation.
• Apply preventive maintenance schedules and record keeping.
• Demonstrate competence in safe operation and maintenance.
• Complete a practical assessment on system operation and troubleshooting.

• System commissioning: pre-start checks, start-up procedures, and log sheets
• Performance evaluation: measuring COP, capacities, and efficiencies
• Preventive maintenance planning and documentation
• Regulatory compliance and environmental best practices
• Practical assessment: start-up, operation, and fault diagnosis

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
