Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Vehicle Forecourt Maintenance

Objectives:
• Understand the scope and importance of forecourt maintenance
• Identify key components and systems on a vehicle forecourt
• Recognise safety and environmental regulations applicable to forecourt operations
• Describe the roles and responsibilities of a forecourt maintenance technician

Topics:
• Overview of vehicle forecourt layouts and functions
• Key forecourt equipment: fuel dispensers, pumps, nozzles, hoses, tanks
• Safety protocols: PPE, fire prevention, spill response
• Environmental compliance: waste management, fuel vapour recovery
• Introduction to maintenance schedules and record-keeping

Day 2: Fuel Dispensing Systems and Components

Objectives:
• Identify and describe fuel dispensing system components
• Explain the operation of fuel pumps, meters, and nozzles
• Perform visual inspections of dispensers and associated hardware
• Understand fuel quality and filtration requirements

Topics:
• Fuel dispenser anatomy: pump, meter, computer, hose, nozzle
• Types of fuel: petrol, diesel, biofuels, and their handling
• Inspection of hoses, nozzles, and breakaway fittings
• Fuel filters and water separators: function and maintenance
• Calibration basics and accuracy checks

Day 3: Underground Storage Tanks and Piping Systems

Objectives:
• Understand underground storage tank (UST) components and integrity
• Perform tank gauging and leak detection procedures
• Inspect piping, sumps, and containment systems
• Apply regulatory requirements for UST monitoring and record-keeping

Topics:
• UST construction: materials, coatings, cathodic protection
• Tank monitoring: automatic tank gauges, interstitial monitoring
• Leak detection methods: statistical inventory reconciliation, vapour monitoring
• Spill prevention equipment: overfill prevention, drop tubes
• Piping systems: suction vs. pressure, materials, leak detection

Day 4: Forecourt Safety Systems and Emergency Response

Objectives:
• Identify emergency shutdown systems and fire suppression equipment
• Demonstrate correct emergency response procedures for fuel spills and fires
• Inspect and test safety equipment regularly
• Understand hazardous area classifications and ignition source control

Topics:
• Emergency stop buttons, fire extinguishers, and suppression systems
• Spill containment and clean-up procedures
• Hazardous area zoning (ATEX/IECEx) and equipment selection
• Static electricity grounding and bonding
• Personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements

Day 5: Routine Maintenance and Inspection Procedures

Objectives:
• Develop and follow a preventive maintenance schedule
• Perform daily, weekly, and monthly inspection checks
• Identify common faults and perform minor repairs
• Document maintenance activities and report issues

Topics:
• Preventive maintenance checklists for dispensers and tanks
• Inspecting and replacing filters, gaskets, and seals
• Testing emergency shutdown and alarm systems
• Lubrication of moving parts and corrosion control
• Record-keeping: logs, maintenance reports, compliance documents

Day 6: Troubleshooting and Repair Techniques

Objectives:
• Diagnose common mechanical and electrical faults in forecourt equipment
• Perform basic repairs on dispensers, pumps, and nozzles
• Use diagnostic tools and interpret error codes
• Apply safe isolation and lockout/tagout procedures

Topics:
• Fault-finding methodology: visual, auditory, and meter checks
• Common dispenser faults: meter inaccuracies, hose leaks, nozzle failures
• Electrical troubleshooting: sensors, relays, controllers
• Replacing components: nozzles, hoses, filters, breakaways
• Lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures for equipment maintenance

Day 7: Integrated Practical Assessment and Course Review

Objectives:
• Apply all learned skills in a simulated forecourt scenario
• Complete a full maintenance inspection and minor repair task
• Demonstrate proper safety and emergency response procedures
• Review key concepts and prepare for certification

• Practical assessment: inspect and service a fuel dispenser
• Simulated emergency: fuel spill response and fire drill
• Documentation: complete maintenance logs and incident reports

Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are essential for learners to develop competence in inspecting, maintaining, and repairing forecourt equipment. Practicals reinforce theoretical knowledge and ensure learners can safely perform tasks such as dispenser servicing, tank monitoring, and emergency response.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Fuel Dispenser Inspection and Nozzle Replacement — Learners perform a visual and operational inspection of a fuel dispenser, then replace a faulty nozzle and hose assembly following manufacturer guidelines. (6h)
  • Practical 2: Underground Storage Tank Monitoring and Leak Detection — Learners use automatic tank gauges and manual stick gauging to measure fuel levels, perform leak detection tests, and inspect sumps and piping. (6h)
  • Practical 3: Emergency Spill Response and Fire Extinguisher Use — Learners simulate a fuel spill and fire scenario, deploying spill containment kits and using fire extinguishers correctly. (6h)
  • Practical 4: Preventive Maintenance and Troubleshooting — Learners perform a full preventive maintenance routine on a dispenser and then diagnose and repair a simulated fault (e.g., meter inaccuracy). (6h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
