Work Station Organisation In Continuous Improvement Environments Training

SAQA US 110018 | NQF 2 | Credits 5 | Duration 2 Days
From $832 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to organise workstations effectively within continuous improvement environments such as Lean, Six Sigma, or Kaizen. It focuses on applying 5S principles and visual management to enhance productivity, safety, and quality.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply the principles of workstation organisation to eliminate waste and improve workflow.
  • Demonstrate the ability to implement 5S (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardise, Sustain) in a practical workplace setting.
  • Analyse current workstation layouts and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of visual management tools and standardised work procedures.
  • Design a workstation organisation plan that supports continuous improvement objectives.
  • Implement and sustain organised workstations through employee engagement and audits.

Target Audience

This course is ideal for team leaders, supervisors, production operators, and quality assurance personnel involved in continuous improvement initiatives in manufacturing, warehousing, or service industries.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, learners should be actively employed in a workplace where they can apply the principles.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Work Station Organisation and Continuous Improvement

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of continuous improvement and their relevance to work station organisation.
• Identify the key elements of an organised and efficient work station.
• Apply the 5S methodology (Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardise, Sustain) to a work station.
• Recognise the role of visual management in maintaining organisation.
• Describe how work station organisation contributes to quality, safety, and productivity.

Topics:
• Introduction to continuous improvement environments (Lean, Kaizen, TQM).
• The 5S methodology: detailed breakdown of each step.
• Visual management tools (shadow boards, labels, colour coding).
• Benefits of organisation: waste reduction, safety, efficiency.
• Practical example: applying 5S to a simulated work station.

Day 2: Advanced Application and Integration of Work Station Organisation

Objectives:
• Implement standardised work procedures for maintaining organisation.
• Use problem-solving tools (e.g., PDCA, root cause analysis) to address work station issues.
• Develop a personal action plan for sustaining improvements.
• Evaluate the impact of work station organisation on team performance.
• Integrate work station organisation with other continuous improvement initiatives.

Topics:
• Standardised work and work instructions.
• Problem-solving tools for work station inefficiencies.
• Sustaining improvements: audits, checklists, and accountability.
• Linking work station organisation to overall continuous improvement (e.g., value stream mapping).
• Case studies and group activity: redesigning a work station for efficiency.

Practicals

6 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Learners engage in hands-on exercises to apply 5S and visual management techniques to a simulated work station. They practice sorting, organising, and standardising, then develop action plans for sustaining improvements. These practicals reinforce theoretical concepts and build competence in real-world application.

Practical Activities
  • 5S Simulation Exercise — In groups, learners apply the 5S steps to a cluttered work station, sorting items, setting them in order, cleaning, and creating standardised visual controls. (3h)
  • Sustainment Planning Activity — Learners develop a sustainment plan including checklists, audit schedules, and accountability measures for a work station they previously organised. (2h)
  • Work Station Redesign Challenge — Given a case study of an inefficient work station, learners redesign the layout and propose improvements using continuous improvement principles. (1h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
