Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Digital Video

Objectives:
• Understand digital video concepts and formats
• Differentiate between analog and digital video
• Identify key components of video resolution and frame rates
• Explain video compression basics
• Recognise common video file formats and codecs

Topics:
• Introduction to digital video: definitions and history
• Analog vs. digital video: advantages of digital
• Video resolution, aspect ratio, and frame rates
• Video compression: lossy vs. lossless, codecs overview
• Common file formats: MP4, AVI, MOV, etc.
• Video containers and codec relationships

Day 2: Video Capture and Acquisition

Objectives:
• Set up and use video capture devices
• Capture video from various sources
• Apply proper lighting and sound techniques
• Manage storage and file organisation
• Troubleshoot common capture issues

Topics:
• Types of video capture devices: cameras, webcams, screen recorders
• Setting up capture: camera settings, tripods, lighting
• Audio capture: microphones, levels, and noise reduction
• Capturing from live sources and existing media
• File management: naming, storage, backup strategies
• Troubleshooting: sync issues, dropped frames, audio problems

Day 3: Video Editing Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Navigate a non-linear editing (NLE) interface
• Perform basic cuts, trims, and transitions
• Manage timeline and tracks
• Apply basic colour correction
• Export video for different platforms

• Introduction to NLE software: interface overview
• Importing and organising clips
• Basic editing: cutting, trimming, splitting
• Working with timeline and multiple tracks
• Transitions: dissolves, wipes, and fades
• Colour correction basics: white balance, exposure, contrast
• Export settings: resolution, bitrate, format selection

Day 4: Audio and Visual Effects

Objectives:
• Enhance video with audio editing and effects
• Apply visual effects and filters
• Use keyframing for animation
• Integrate text and titles
• Understand compositing basics

Topics:
• Audio editing: volume, fade, noise removal
• Audio effects: equalisation, compression
• Visual effects: colour grading, filters, overlays
• Keyframing: position, scale, opacity animation
• Adding text and titles: styles, motion
• Compositing: layers, blending modes, green screen

Day 5: Video Compression and Optimisation for Web

Objectives:
• Understand web video standards and protocols
• Apply appropriate compression settings
• Optimise video for streaming and download
• Use adaptive bitrate streaming
• Test video performance across devices

• Web video standards: HTML5, HLS, MPEG-DASH
• Compression settings: bitrate, resolution, codec selection
• Optimising for streaming: buffering, chunking
• Adaptive bitrate streaming: multiple renditions
• Testing tools: browser compatibility, network simulation
• Best practices for mobile and low-bandwidth scenarios

Day 6: Interactive and Multimedia Integration

Objectives:
• Embed video into web pages and applications
• Add interactivity: hotspots, quizzes, chapters
• Integrate video with other media (audio, images, text)
• Use video APIs and players
• Apply accessibility features

• Embedding video: HTML5 video tag, iframes
• Interactive video: hotspots, clickable links, quizzes
• Multimedia integration: synchronising with slides, animations

Day 7: Final Project and Assessment

• Plan and produce a complete video project
• Apply all learned skills from capture to delivery
• Optimise for web and multimedia platforms
• Present and critique final projects
• Reflect on learning and industry applications

• Project planning: storyboard, script, timeline
• Production: capture, edit, effects, audio
• Optimisation: compression, web-ready formats
• Integration: embedding, interactivity
• Presentation: showcase projects, peer feedback
• Assessment: unit standard criteria review

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
