Local Area Network Installation For Workstation Setup Training

SAQA US 114060 | NQF 5 | Credits 5 | Duration 2 Days
From $610 per delegate

Description

This course provides learners with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge required to install and configure local area networks (LANs) for workstation setup in a corporate environment. Participants will gain hands-on experience in cabling, network device configuration, and troubleshooting to ensure reliable connectivity and performance.

Learning Outcomes

  • Plan and design a local area network for a specified workstation environment.
  • Install and terminate network cabling and connectors according to industry standards.
  • Configure network devices such as switches, routers, and access points for LAN connectivity.
  • Implement TCP/IP addressing and subnetting schemes for efficient network operation.
  • Test and troubleshoot network connectivity using appropriate tools and techniques.
  • Document network installation and configuration for future reference and maintenance.

Target Audience

This course is designed for IT support technicians, network administrators, and individuals seeking to enter the networking field. It is ideal for those responsible for setting up and maintaining workstation connectivity in small to medium-sized businesses.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Local Area Networks and Workstation Connectivity

Objectives:
• Understand the basic concepts and components of a Local Area Network (LAN).
• Identify different types of network cables, connectors, and topologies used in LAN installation.
• Describe the OSI and TCP/IP models and their relevance to workstation setup.
• Explain the role of network devices such as switches, routers, and access points.

Topics:
• Overview of LANs: definition, benefits, and common applications in workplace environments.
• Network topologies: star, bus, ring, and mesh – advantages and disadvantages.
• Network media: twisted-pair cable (Cat5e, Cat6), coaxial cable, fiber optic – characteristics and use cases.
• Network devices: hubs, switches, routers, and wireless access points – functions and placement.
• Introduction to IP addressing: IPv4, subnet masks, and default gateways.
• Structured cabling standards (TIA/EIA-568) and best practices for cable management.
• Safety precautions when handling network equipment and cabling.

Day 2: Installation, Configuration, and Troubleshooting of LAN Workstations

Objectives:
• Plan and lay out a small LAN installation for a workstation environment.
• Install and terminate network cables using RJ45 connectors and a crimping tool.
• Configure network settings on a workstation for connectivity.
• Test and verify network connectivity using command-line tools.
• Troubleshoot common LAN and workstation connectivity issues.

Topics:
• Site survey and planning: identifying equipment locations, cable routes, and power sources.
• Cable installation techniques: pulling, securing, and labeling cables.
• Terminating twisted-pair cables: T568A and T568B wiring standards.
• Connecting workstations to the network: patch panels, wall jacks, and switch connections.
• Configuring IP settings: static vs DHCP, DNS, and gateway configuration on Windows/Linux.
• Testing tools: cable testers, toner probes, and network analyzers.
• Troubleshooting common issues: no connectivity, slow speeds, IP conflicts, and faulty cables.
• Documentation and labeling for future maintenance.

Practicals

6 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practical sessions allow learners to apply theoretical knowledge in a simulated workplace environment. They will install, terminate, test, and configure a small LAN, gaining essential skills for workstation setup and troubleshooting.

Practical Activities
  • Cable Termination and Testing — Learners practice stripping, crimping, and testing twisted-pair cables using RJ45 connectors and a cable tester. (2h)
  • LAN Infrastructure Setup — Learners set up a small network by connecting patch panels, switches, and workstations using pre-terminated cables. (2h)
  • Workstation Network Configuration and Troubleshooting — Learners configure IP settings on workstations, test connectivity using ping/ipconfig, and resolve common network issues. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
