Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Server Hardware and Safety

Objectives:
• Identify common server form factors and components
• Understand electrostatic discharge (ESD) precautions and workplace safety
• Describe the role of servers in a network infrastructure
• Recognise server documentation and labelling conventions

Topics:
• Overview of server types: tower, rack, blade
• Major internal components: CPU, RAM, storage, PSU, motherboard
• ESD prevention and safe handling procedures
• Server room environment: cooling, power, cabling
• Introduction to server documentation and asset tagging
• Basic tools for server maintenance
• Safety regulations (OHS Act) and personal protective equipment
• Manufacturer specifications and datasheets

Day 2: Server Disassembly and Component Identification

Objectives:
• Safely power down and disconnect a server
• Remove and identify all major modules
• Document the disassembly process
• Apply ESD-safe work practices

Topics:
• Step-by-step server power-down procedure
• Removing covers, bezels, and chassis parts
• Identifying and removing: power supply, fans, storage drives, RAID controllers
• Removing CPU heatsink and CPU, RAM modules, expansion cards
• Labelling and storing removed components
• Using manufacturer service manuals
• Common module form factors (DIMM, PCIe, SATA/SAS, etc.)
• Inspection of components for damage or wear

Day 3: Diagnostics and Fault Finding at Module Level

Objectives:
• Use diagnostic tools to identify faulty modules
• Interpret POST codes and LED indicators
• Perform visual and functional checks on modules
• Document fault symptoms and test results

Topics:
• POST process and beep codes
• Server management controllers (iLO, iDRAC, IPMI)
• Diagnostic software and bootable utilities
• Multimeter basics for power supply testing
• Checking RAM with Memtest86
• Hard drive health checks (S.M.A.R.T.)
• Visual inspection: bulging capacitors, burnt traces, corrosion
• Systematic fault isolation techniques

Day 4: Module Level Repair Techniques

Objectives:
• Replace faulty modules with compatible parts
• Perform simple soldering repairs on boards
• Reflow solder joints for BGA components (demonstration)
• Verify repair using diagnostic tools

• Selecting replacement modules: compatibility and specifications
• Handling and installing: PSU, RAM, storage drives, fans
• Soldering safety and technique for through-hole components
• Replacing capacitors, resistors, and connectors
• Introduction to BGA rework (hot air station)
• Cleaning contacts and connectors
• Thermal paste application for CPU/heatsink
• Post-repair functional testing

Day 5: Server Assembly and Configuration

Objectives:
• Reassemble a server from modules
• Configure BIOS/UEFI settings for hardware
• Install and configure RAID arrays
• Verify system boots and recognises all components

• Reassembly order: chassis, PSU, motherboard, CPU, RAM, storage
• Cable management and airflow considerations
• BIOS/UEFI setup: date/time, boot order, hardware enable/disable
• RAID configuration: levels 0,1,5,10; creating arrays
• Installing OS basics (demonstration)
• Driver installation and firmware updates
• Stress testing (CPU, memory, disk)
• Documenting configuration

Day 6: Preventative Maintenance and Troubleshooting Scenarios

Objectives:
• Perform routine preventative maintenance tasks
• Troubleshoot common server issues using systematic approach
• Replace failing components proactively
• Maintain service logs

Topics:
• Preventative maintenance schedule: cleaning, firmware updates, log reviews
• Cleaning dust from fans, heatsinks, and filters
• Monitoring system logs and alerts
• Troubleshooting scenarios: no power, no POST, overheating, disk failures
• Swapping redundant components (hot-swap PSU, drives)
• Battery backup (UPS) maintenance
• Spare parts management
• Reporting and documentation

Day 7: Practical Assessment and Course Review

Objectives:
• Complete a timed practical assessment: diagnose, repair, and reassemble a server
• Demonstrate safe working practices
• Present documentation of the repair process
• Review key concepts and address gaps

Practicals

24 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Learners spend approximately 24 hours performing hands-on tasks including server disassembly, module-level diagnostics, repair, and reassembly. Practical sessions are integrated daily to reinforce theory and develop competence in safe, systematic server maintenance.

Practical Activities
  • Server Disassembly and Component Identification — Learners power down, disconnect, and fully disassemble a server tower, identifying and labelling each major module. (4h)
  • Diagnostic Testing and Fault Isolation — Using diagnostic tools and visual inspection, learners identify faulty modules in servers with pre-seeded faults. (5h)
  • Module Level Repair and Replacement — Learners replace faulty modules (PSU, RAM, storage, fans) and perform basic soldering repairs on training boards. (6h)
  • Server Assembly and Configuration — Learners reassemble a server from modules, configure BIOS, set up RAID, and verify boot. (5h)
  • Practical Assessment: Fault Diagnosis and Repair — Learners receive a non-functional server, perform systematic diagnosis, replace the faulty module, and bring the server to operational state. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.
