Troubleshooting Single And Multi User Operating Systems Training

SAQA US 114183 | NQF 5 | Credits 7 | Duration 4 Days
From $1,107 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the skills to diagnose and resolve common issues in single-user and multi-user operating systems. Participants will learn systematic troubleshooting methodologies, identify hardware and software conflicts, and apply corrective actions to restore system functionality. The course emphasizes practical problem-solving in real-world IT support scenarios.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply systematic troubleshooting methodologies to identify and resolve operating system errors.
  • Analyze system logs and diagnostic tools to pinpoint root causes of single-user and multi-user system failures.
  • Evaluate hardware and software conflicts affecting operating system stability and performance.
  • Implement corrective actions including configuration changes, driver updates, and system restores.
  • Demonstrate effective communication of technical issues and solutions to end-users and stakeholders.

Target Audience

IT support technicians, helpdesk agents, and system administrators who are responsible for maintaining and troubleshooting desktop and server operating systems in corporate environments.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Operating Systems and Troubleshooting Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Understand the role and types of operating systems in single and multi-user environments.
• Identify common OS components and their interactions.
• Learn systematic troubleshooting methodologies.
• Apply basic diagnostic commands and tools.

Topics:
• Overview of operating systems (Windows, Linux, macOS)
• Single-user vs multi-user OS characteristics
• OS architecture: kernel, shell, file system, drivers
• Troubleshooting methodology: identify, isolate, resolve, verify
• Introduction to command-line tools (ping, ipconfig, ls, ps)
• Log files and error messages interpretation
• Safe boot modes and recovery environments

Day 2: Troubleshooting Single-User Operating Systems

Objectives:
• Diagnose and resolve common single-user OS issues.
• Manage startup, application, and hardware problems.
• Utilize system utilities for performance and stability.
• Implement preventive maintenance practices.

Topics:
• Boot process failures and startup repair
• Application crashes and compatibility issues
• Hardware driver conflicts and device management
• Memory and disk diagnostic tools
• System restore and backup strategies
• User profile corruption and file system errors
• Malware removal and security settings

Day 3: Troubleshooting Multi-User Operating Systems

Objectives:
• Understand multi-user environment challenges (permissions, resources).
• Troubleshoot user account and authentication issues.
• Resolve network and resource sharing problems.
• Manage remote access and concurrent session conflicts.

Topics:
• User account management and permissions (ACLs, groups)
• Authentication failures and password policies
• Network connectivity and shared resource access
• Print server and file server troubleshooting
• Remote desktop and SSH connection issues
• Session management: logon scripts, profile conflicts
• Auditing and event log analysis for multi-user systems

Day 4: Advanced Troubleshooting and Integration

Objectives:
• Apply advanced diagnostic techniques (performance monitoring, debugging).
• Troubleshoot virtualized and cloud-based OS environments.
• Develop comprehensive troubleshooting plans.
• Integrate troubleshooting skills into IT support workflows.

Topics:
• Performance monitoring tools (Task Manager, Performance Monitor, top)
• Debugging with system logs and crash dumps
• Virtual machine and container OS issues
• Cloud instance and remote server troubleshooting
• Scripting for automated diagnostics (PowerShell, Bash)
• Creating knowledge base documentation
• Case studies and simulated troubleshooting scenarios

Practicals

12 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on labs provide learners with real-world troubleshooting experience in both single and multi-user OS environments. Learners will diagnose and resolve simulated faults using virtual machines and networked systems, reinforcing theoretical concepts.

Practical Activities
  • Lab 1: Single-User OS Troubleshooting — Learners work on Windows and Linux VMs with pre-configured faults (boot failures, driver issues, malware). (4h)
  • Lab 2: Multi-User OS Troubleshooting — Learners troubleshoot user access issues, network shares, and remote connectivity in a simulated multi-user network. (4h)
  • Lab 3: Advanced Diagnostics and Integration — Learners use performance monitors, debug logs, and scripts to resolve complex issues in a multi-OS environment. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
