Physical, Mathematical, Computer and Life Sciences › Physical Sciences
This course provides the knowledge and practical skills required to safely operate a multi-engine aeroplane in compliance with South African Civil Aviation Authority regulations. It covers advanced flight principles, emergency procedures, and crew coordination to ensure competency in multi-pilot operations. Successful completion prepares learners for the Multi-Engine Aeroplane Pilot Certificate.
This course is for licensed single-engine pilots seeking to add a multi-engine rating to their licence, as well as aviation professionals aiming to advance their careers in multi-crew operations.
Valid South African Private Pilot Licence (PPL) or Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) with single-engine aeroplane rating, and a minimum of 150 hours total flight time.
Objectives:
• Understand multi-engine aeroplane systems and their operational differences from single-engine aircraft.
• Analyze critical engine concepts, asymmetric thrust, and minimum control speeds.
• Apply performance calculations for single-engine operations and weight & balance.
• Demonstrate knowledge of emergency procedures and decision-making in multi-engine scenarios.
Topics:
• Multi-engine aeroplane systems: engines, propellers, fuel, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
• Critical engine and asymmetric thrust: VMC, VMCA, VMCG.
• Performance: single-engine climb performance, drift-down, and landing distance.
• Weight and balance considerations for multi-engine aircraft.
• Emergency procedures: engine failure after takeoff, in-flight shutdown, and feathering.
• Multi-engine aeroplane handling characteristics and limitations.
• Pre-flight planning and risk management for multi-engine operations.
• Regulatory requirements for multi-engine rating per SA-CATS 61.
Learners will complete a flight simulation session focusing on multi-engine aeroplane systems management and emergency procedures. Practicals reinforce theoretical knowledge through hands-on operation of simulated multi-engine aircraft, including engine failure drills and asymmetric flight handling.
Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.
Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.
Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.
On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.
| Component | Out of | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) | 100% | 30% |
| Daily Average (multiple choice) | 100% | 20% |
| Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) | 100% | 50% |
| Final Total | — | 100% |
All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.
