Physical, Mathematical, Computer and Life Sciences › Physical Sciences
This course equips pilots with the specialized skills and knowledge required to safely conduct night flying operations. It covers pre-flight planning, aircraft lighting systems, visual illusions, and emergency procedures specific to night conditions. The training ensures compliance with South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) regulations and enhances pilot confidence and competence in low-visibility environments.
This course is designed for licensed pilots who wish to add night rating to their qualifications or require refresher training in night operations. It is also suitable for student pilots preparing for night flying endorsements.
Valid pilot license (minimum Private Pilot License) and current medical certificate.
Objectives:
• Understand the physiological and environmental challenges of night flying.
• Apply night-specific pre-flight planning and equipment checks.
• Demonstrate proficiency in night navigation and airport lighting.
• Manage risks associated with night operations, including spatial disorientation.
• Integrate crew resource management (CRM) techniques for night scenarios.
Topics:
• Human factors: night vision, spatial disorientation, and fatigue.
• Aircraft lighting systems and external light management.
• Night pre-flight inspection and cockpit preparation.
• Airport lighting: runway, taxiway, and approach lights.
• Night navigation: use of instruments, GPS, and visual references.
• Emergency procedures specific to night operations.
• Risk assessment and decision-making for night flying.
• Regulatory requirements for night operations (SA-CATS 91, 135).
Hands-on flight training conducted during actual night conditions (or in a flight simulator approved for night operations). Learners will practice cockpit setup, takeoff, landing, navigation, and emergency procedures under night visual flight rules (VFR).
Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.
Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.
Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.
On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.
| Component | Out of | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) | 100% | 30% |
| Daily Average (multiple choice) | 100% | 20% |
| Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) | 100% | 50% |
| Final Total | — | 100% |
All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.
