This course equips pilots with the knowledge and practical skills to safely perform slow flight, stalls, and spin recoveries in aeroplanes. It focuses on recognising the aerodynamic conditions leading to stalls and spins, and executing correct recovery techniques to enhance flight safety.
This course is designed for student pilots, licensed pilots seeking refresher training, and flight instructors who need to demonstrate and teach stall and spin recovery procedures.
Valid Private Pilot Licence (PPL) or equivalent, or be enrolled in an approved flight training programme.
Objectives:
• Define slow flight, stalls, and spins and explain their aerodynamic principles.
• Identify the stages of a stall and the factors affecting stall speed.
• Demonstrate recovery techniques from stalls in various configurations.
• Explain spin aerodynamics and the phases of a spin.
• Perform correct spin recovery procedures.
Topics:
• Aerodynamics of slow flight: angle of attack, lift, drag, and power required.
• Stall recognition: buffet, stall warning, and incipient vs. full stall.
• Factors affecting stall speed: weight, CG, bank, and configuration.
• Stall recovery techniques: power, pitch, and coordinated controls.
• Spin aerodynamics: autorotation, phases (incipient, developed, recovery).
• Spin recovery procedures: PARE (Power, Ailerons neutral, Rudder opposite, Elevator forward).
• Common errors and safety precautions during stall and spin practice.
• Regulatory requirements for stall and spin training.
Learners will practice slow flight, stall recognition, and recovery techniques in a flight simulator or aircraft under instructor supervision. They will also perform spin recovery procedures in a simulator to ensure correct application of the PARE sequence.
Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.
Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.
Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.
On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.
