Description

This course equips learners with the skills to produce detailed structural steel detail drawings specifically for light industrial buildings. Participants will gain competence in interpreting architectural and engineering sketches, applying standard detailing conventions, and creating accurate fabrication and erection drawings. The training ensures compliance with South African building regulations and industry standards.

Learning Outcomes

  • Interpret architectural and structural engineering sketches to extract steelwork requirements for light industrial buildings.

  • Prepare detailed fabrication drawings for structural steel members, including beams, columns, bracing, and connections.
  • Generate erection drawings showing assembly sequences, bolt schedules, and welding symbols.
  • Demonstrate the use of computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce accurate 2D and 3D steel detail drawings.

Target Audience

This course is designed for drafters, detailers, and technicians in the steel construction industry, as well as engineering graduates seeking practical detailing skills. It is also suitable for site supervisors and project managers who need to interpret structural steel drawings.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, a basic understanding of engineering drawings and mathematics is recommended.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Structural Steel Detailing

Objectives:
• Understand the role of a detailer in light industrial buildings
• Identify key components of structural steel frames
• Recognise different types of steel sections and their applications
• Interpret basic building terminology

• Roles and responsibilities of a structural steel detailer
• Introduction to steel sections: I-beams, channels, angles, hollow sections
• Basic building terminology: column, beam, brace, girt, purlin
• Safety considerations in detailing

Day 2: Reading Architectural and Structural Drawings

Objectives:
• Interpret architectural floor plans and elevations
• Read structural grid lines and column layouts
• Understand dimensioning conventions
• Identify symbols and abbreviations used in steel detailing

• Architectural vs structural drawings
• Grid lines, column lines, and setting out
• Dimensioning standards (SANS 10111)
• Common symbols for welds, bolts, and surface finishes
• Abbreviations in steel detailing

Day 3: Steel Material Specifications and Properties

Objectives:
• Identify common steel grades used in light industrial buildings
• Understand material properties: yield strength, tensile strength, ductility
• Interpret material test certificates
• Apply corrosion protection requirements

• Steel grades: S235, S355, S450
• Mechanical properties and their significance
• Material standards (SANS 50025, EN 10025)
• Corrosion protection: galvanising, painting, weathering steel
• Handling and storage of steel

Day 4: Connection Types and Fasteners

Objectives:
• Differentiate between bolted and welded connections
• Identify common fastener types: bolts, nuts, washers
• Understand weld symbols and their meaning
• Recognise simple connection details

• Bolted connections: bolts, nuts, washers, tension control bolts
• Welded connections: fillet welds, butt welds, plug welds
• Weld symbols per SANS 10163
• Standard connection details: beam-to-column, column base plate

Day 5: Introduction to CAD for Steel Detailing

Objectives:
• Navigate basic CAD software interface
• Set up drawing templates and layers
• Create simple 2D geometry: lines, arcs, polylines
• Use basic editing commands: trim, extend, offset

• CAD software overview (AutoCAD or similar)
• Drawing setup: units, limits, layers, linetypes
• Basic drawing commands: line, circle, rectangle, polyline
• Editing commands: trim, extend, mirror, copy, move

Day 6: Detailing Columns and Base Plates

Objectives:
• Detail column centre lines and elevations
• Draw column base plates with anchor bolts
• Apply stiffeners and gusset plates
• Add dimensions and notes

• Base plate details: dimensions, bolt holes, stiffeners

Day 7: Detailing Beams and Girders

• Detail beam end connections: seated, framed, end plate
• Identify beam camber and coping
• Add bolt groups and weld details

• Beam-to-column connections: fin plate, end plate, seated
• Beam splices and stiffeners

• Bolt group layout and weld lengths

Day 8: Detailing Bracing Systems

Objectives:
• Understand the role of bracing in stability
• Detail cross bracing, chevron bracing, and portal frames
• Draw brace connections to columns and beams
• Apply turnbuckles and tensioning devices

• Types of bracing: X-bracing, V-bracing, K-bracing
• Brace member selection: angles, rods, cables
• Brace connection details: gusset plates, cleats
• Tensioning and adjustment details
• Portal frame bracing

Day 9: Detailing Purlins, Girts, and Cladding Supports

Objectives:
• Detail purlin and girt layouts on roof and walls
• Design simple cleats and brackets
• Draw cladding rails and sheeting rails
• Coordinate with cladding profiles

• Purlin types: Z, C, and channel sections
• Purlin connection to rafters: cleats, brackets
• Girt connection to columns
• Sheeting rails and cladding supports
• Setting out for roofing and wall cladding

Day 10: Detailing Stairs, Platforms, and Handrails

Objectives:
• Draw staircase layouts and sections
• Detail stringers, treads, and landings
• Design handrails and guardrails
• Apply safety standards

• Stringer design and connection
• Tread and riser dimensions

Day 11: Detailing Crane Girders and Runway Beams

Day 12: Detailing Mezzanine Floors and Platforms

Day 13: Detailing Canopies and Shelters

Practicals

Overview

The practicals are essential for learners to apply theoretical knowledge in hands-on CAD and 3D modelling exercises, producing real fabrication drawings and bills of materials under supervision. These sessions ensure competence in the core skills of structural steel detailing.

Practical Activities
  • CAD Basics and 2D Detailing — Learners practice basic CAD commands and produce 2D drawings of simple steel connections and components. (20h)
  • 3D Modelling of Structural Frame — Learners model a complete light industrial building frame in 3D, including columns, beams, bracing, and connections. (24h)
  • Fabrication Drawing Production — Learners extract fabrication drawings from the 3D model, produce single-part and assembly drawings with full detailing. (20h)
  • Bill of Materials and Quality Check — Learners create a bill of materials from the model and perform a quality check on their drawings. (16h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
