This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to operate articulated dump trucks safely and efficiently in mining, construction, and quarry environments. Target Audience

This course is for new and experienced operators of articulated dump trucks, as well as supervisors and safety officers responsible for earthmoving operations in the mining, construction, and civil engineering sectors.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, learners must be physically fit and able to operate heavy machinery.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Articulated Dump Trucks and Legislative Framework

Objectives:
• Understand the course structure, outcomes, and assessment criteria.
• Identify the key components and specifications of articulated dump trucks (ADTs).
• Explain the South African legislative requirements, including the Mine Health and Safety Act and OHS Act.
• Recognize the roles and responsibilities of operators and site supervisors.

• Overview of ADT types, manufacturers, and common models.
• Legislative framework: MHSA, OHS Act, and SANS codes.
• Operator duties, rights, and legal liabilities.
• Basic terminology: payload, dump angle, articulation, oscillation.
• Site safety induction and hazard awareness.

Day 2: Pre-Operational Checks and Daily Inspections

Objectives:
• Perform thorough pre-start inspections according to manufacturer guidelines.
• Identify and report defects in tires, brakes, hydraulics, and steering.
• Complete daily checklists and logbooks accurately.
• Understand the importance of fluid levels, belts, and filters.

• Walk-around inspection procedure.
• Checking engine oil, coolant, hydraulic fluid, and fuel.
• Tire condition, pressure, and tread depth.
• Brake system inspection: service and parking brakes.
• Steering and articulation joint checks.

Day 3: Controls, Instruments, and Cab Ergonomics

• Identify all operator controls, gauges, and warning lights.
• Adjust seat, steering column, and mirrors for optimal visibility.
• Understand the function of the retarder, exhaust brake, and transmission retarder.
• Demonstrate start-up and shut-down procedures.

• Instrument panel: speedometer, tachometer, temperature, pressure gauges.
• Warning systems: alarms, indicators, and diagnostic displays.

Day 4: Basic Driving Techniques and Machine Handling

• Perform smooth acceleration, braking, and steering on flat terrain.

• Practice safe articulation and oscillation management.
• Demonstrate correct use of the retarder on gentle slopes.

• Driving posture and hand positioning.

Day 5: Loading Procedures and Payload Management

• Monitor payload weight distribution and avoid overloading.
• Understand the effects of load placement on stability.

Day 6: Hauling and Dumping Techniques

• Use the body hoist controls smoothly.
• Manage tailgate operation if applicable.

• Use engine braking and retarder effectively on steep gradients.
• Navigate rough terrain while maintaining stability.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.
