Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to safely and effectively connect sewerage systems to public wastewater infrastructure. It covers relevant regulations, procedures, and best practices to ensure compliance and environmental protection.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply relevant regulations and bylaws when connecting sewerage systems to public wastewater infrastructure.
  • Demonstrate safe work practices and use of personal protective equipment during sewer connection tasks.
  • Analyze site conditions to determine appropriate connection methods and materials.
  • Implement proper excavation, pipe laying, and jointing techniques for sewer connections.
  • Evaluate connection integrity through testing and inspection procedures.
  • Design basic sewer connection layouts in compliance with municipal standards.

Target Audience

This training is designed for plumbers, construction workers, municipal infrastructure technicians, and anyone involved in the installation or maintenance of sewer connections.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

• Identify relevant South African legislation and standards for wastewater infrastructure.
• Explain the roles and responsibilities of stakeholders in sewerage connections.
• Recognize health, safety, and environmental considerations in sewerage work.

Topics:
• Overview of sewerage systems: gravity, pressure, and vacuum systems.
• Key legislation: Water Services Act, National Water Act, SANS 10400.
• Stakeholder roles: municipalities, developers, plumbers, and engineers.
• Health and safety: hazards, PPE, and safe work practices.
• Environmental impact: preventing pollution and protecting water resources.
• Introduction to public wastewater infrastructure: treatment plants, pump stations, and mains.

Day 2: Planning and Design of Sewer Connections

Objectives:
• Interpret site plans and as-built drawings for sewer connections.
• Calculate pipe gradients and flow requirements for domestic connections.
• Select appropriate pipe materials and fittings for sewerage connections.
• Understand the permit application process for connecting to public sewers.

Topics:
• Reading and interpreting sewer layout drawings.
• Hydraulic principles: flow rates, pipe slopes, and minimum cover.
• Pipe materials: PVC, concrete, HDPE – properties and applications.
• Fittings and junctions: bends, tees, inspection eyes, and manholes.
• Permit requirements: application forms, fees, and approvals.
• Design considerations: property boundaries, existing infrastructure, and future expansion.
• Case study: planning a typical residential sewer connection.

Day 3: Construction and Installation Techniques

Objectives:
• Demonstrate safe excavation and trenching practices for sewer lines.
• Install pipework correctly, including bedding, jointing, and backfilling.
• Construct manholes and inspection chambers to specifications.
• Perform pressure testing and inspection of installed sewer lines.

Topics:
• Excavation safety: shoring, sloping, and trench boxes.
• Pipe laying procedures: bedding material, alignment, and gradient checks.
• Jointing methods: solvent cement, rubber ring, and electrofusion.
• Manhole construction: precast vs. cast-in-situ, benching, and covers.
• Inspection chambers: purpose, location, and installation.
• Testing: air test, water test, and CCTV inspection.
• Backfilling and compaction: materials, layers, and compaction testing.
• Site safety and traffic management during installation.

Day 4: Commissioning, Maintenance, and Troubleshooting

Objectives:
• Commission a new sewer connection and hand over to the municipality.
• Identify common faults in sewerage systems and apply corrective actions.
• Implement routine maintenance procedures for sewer connections.

• Handover procedures: as-built drawings, warranties, and records.
• Common faults: blockages, leaks, root intrusion, and pipe breaks.
• Troubleshooting techniques: rodding, jetting, and CCTV inspection.
• Preventive maintenance: cleaning schedules and inspections.
• Disconnection procedures: capping, plugging, and abandonment.
• Emergency response: overflow containment and repair protocols.
• Final assessment and course wrap-up.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 30%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 70%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
