Day 1: Introduction to High Mast Lighting Systems and Safety

Objectives:
• Understand the components and functions of high mast lighting systems
• Identify relevant safety regulations and standards (e.g., OHS Act, SANS)
• Recognize hazards associated with high mast lighting maintenance
• Apply basic risk assessment and control measures

• Overview of high mast lighting systems: poles, luminaires, electrical systems
• Relevant legislation: OHS Act, SANS 10142-1, SANS 10019
• Safety requirements: PPE, working at heights, lockout/tagout
• Hazard identification and risk assessment
• Emergency procedures and rescue planning
• Introduction to inspection schedules and maintenance records

Day 2: Inspection Procedures and Techniques

Objectives:
• Conduct visual and structural inspections of high mast components
• Use inspection tools and equipment correctly
• Document inspection findings accurately
• Identify common defects and deterioration

Topics:
• Visual inspection of poles, foundations, and anchor bolts
• Inspection of luminaires: seals, lenses, reflectors, photocells
• Electrical system checks: wiring, connectors, earth continuity
• Use of inspection tools: multimeters, thermal imaging cameras, torque wrenches
• Documentation: inspection reports, defect logging
• Common defects: corrosion, loose connections, lamp failures, water ingress

Day 3: Operation and Routine Maintenance

Objectives:
• Operate high mast lighting systems safely
• Perform routine maintenance tasks
• Replace lamps and components correctly
• Understand maintenance schedules and record keeping

• Operating procedures: switching, timers, photocell adjustment
• Routine maintenance: cleaning luminaires, tightening connections
• Lamp replacement: types (LED, HID), handling, disposal
• Component replacement: ballasts, capacitors, photocells
• Maintenance scheduling and logbooks
• Lubrication and corrosion protection

Day 4: Advanced Fault Finding and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Diagnose and rectify common faults in high mast lighting
• Perform troubleshooting using systematic methods
• Integrate inspection, operation, and maintenance skills
• Apply knowledge in a simulated or real-world scenario

Topics:
• Fault finding methodology: visual, functional, electrical tests
• Common faults: no light, flickering, dimming, short circuits
• Use of diagnostic tools: insulation testers, clamp meters
• Circuit analysis and wiring diagrams
• Integration exercise: full inspection and maintenance cycle
• Review of best practices and continuous improvement

Practicals

Overview

Learners will engage in hands-on practical sessions covering inspection, operation, maintenance, and fault finding on high mast lighting systems. These sessions reinforce theoretical knowledge and develop competence in using tools, performing tasks safely, and documenting work.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Safety and Inspection — Learners conduct a full visual and electrical inspection of a high mast lighting system, using appropriate PPE and safety procedures. (4h)
  • Practical 2: Routine Maintenance and Lamp Replacement — Learners perform routine maintenance tasks including cleaning, tightening connections, and replacing lamps and components. (4h)
  • Practical 3: Fault Finding and Troubleshooting — Learners diagnose and rectify simulated faults in a high mast lighting system using systematic troubleshooting methods. (3h)
  • Practical 4: Integrated Maintenance Exercise — Learners complete a full inspection, maintenance, and fault-finding cycle on a high mast lighting system, simulating a real-world scenario. (3h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.
