This course equips learners with a comprehensive understanding of structural steel building framing systems and their behavioural principles under load. Participants will gain the knowledge and skills to analyse, design, and assess steel frames in accordance with South African standards. The training is ideal for professionals involved in the specification, erection, or quality control of structural steelwork.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply fundamental principles of structural steel behaviour to analyse building frames under various loading conditions.
  • Evaluate the performance of simple and continuous steel beams, columns, and connections in a building frame context.
  • Design basic steel framing layouts considering stability, bracing, and load paths.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of relevant South African standards (SANS 10160, SANS 10016) in steel frame design and erection.
  • Assess the impact of fabrication and erection tolerances on frame behaviour.
  • Implement safety protocols for steel erection and temporary stability during construction.

Target Audience

This course is intended for civil and structural engineers, technicians, site supervisors, and construction project managers who require a deeper understanding of steel framing behaviour. It is also suitable for steel detailers and quantity surveyors working on building projects.

Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Structural Steel Behaviour and Building Framing

Objectives:
• Explain the basic principles of structural steel behaviour under load
• Identify the key components of a structural steel building frame
• Describe the different types of steel sections and their applications
• Understand the role of connections in steel framing
• Interpret simple structural drawings and symbols

Topics:
• Introduction to structural steel: properties, advantages, and limitations
• Load paths and basic structural behaviour (tension, compression, bending, shear)
• Steel sections: I-beams, channels, angles, hollow sections
• Steel framing systems: portal frames, trusses, beams and columns
• Connection types: bolted, welded, pinned, and rigid
• Introduction to structural drawings and notation
• Safety considerations in steel construction

Day 2: Advanced Framing Principles, Design Considerations, and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Analyse load distribution and stability in steel frames
• Evaluate connection design and performance
• Identify common failure modes and prevention strategies
• Apply principles to interpret design documentation
• Understand erection sequences and temporary stability

Topics:
• Lateral stability: bracing, diaphragms, and moment frames
• Connection design: strength, stiffness, and ductility
• Buckling and slenderness: local and global effects
• Fatigue and brittle fracture considerations
• Erection sequences and temporary works
• Quality control and inspection of steelwork
• Case studies of steel frame behaviour in real buildings

Overview

Practical sessions allow learners to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios. Through hands-on activities, participants will identify steel sections, examine connection details, and analyse load paths using scale models and structural drawings.

Practical Activities
  • Steel Section Identification and Properties — Learners handle sample steel sections, measure dimensions, and calculate section properties using tables and formulas. (2h)
  • Connection Detail Analysis — Using connection models and drawings, learners identify bolt and weld types, assess load transfer, and discuss failure modes. (2h)
  • Load Path and Stability Exercise — Using a scale steel frame model, learners apply loads and observe deflection and stability, then propose bracing solutions. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
