Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Structural Steel and Connection Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Understand the role of connections in structural steelwork
• Identify common steel sections and their properties
• Explain the basic principles of load transfer in connections
• Differentiate between connection types (simple, rigid, semi-rigid)
• Recognise relevant SANS standards and codes

Topics:
• Overview of structural steel as a construction material
• Steel sections: I-beams, channels, angles, hollow sections
• Introduction to connection components: bolts, welds, plates
• Load paths and force transfer mechanisms
• Classification of connections by stiffness and strength
• Introduction to SANS 10162 and SANS 10163
• Safety considerations in connection design
• Common connection failures and lessons learned

Day 2: Bolted Connections – Design and Detailing

Objectives:
• Calculate bolt capacity in shear and tension
• Design bolted connections for bearing and slip resistance
• Apply bolt spacing and edge distance requirements
• Interpret bolt grades and preloading methods
• Prepare basic bolted connection details

Topics:
• Bolt types, grades, and material properties
• Shear capacity of bolts: single and double shear
• Tension capacity and prying action
• Combined shear and tension in bolts
• Bearing resistance in plates and members
• Slip-critical connections and preloading
• Minimum and maximum spacing, edge distances
• Detailing rules for bolted connections

Day 3: Welded Connections – Design and Detailing

Objectives:
• Identify weld types and symbols per SANS 10163
• Calculate weld size and length for fillet welds
• Design groove welds for full-strength connections
• Understand welding processes and quality control
• Apply weld detailing rules and inspection criteria

• Weld types: fillet, groove, plug, slot
• Weld symbols and notation on drawings
• Fillet weld design: throat thickness, effective length
• Groove weld design: complete and partial penetration
• Weld metal strength and matching electrodes
• Welding processes: SMAW, GMAW, FCAW
• Weld defects and non-destructive testing (NDT)
• Detailing for weld access and quality

Day 4: Connection Configuration and Member End Connections

Objectives:
• Design simple shear connections (fin plates, angles)
• Design moment-resisting connections (end plates, T-stubs)
• Analyse connection stiffness and ductility requirements
• Apply eccentric load effects on bolt groups
• Detail connections for beam-to-column and beam-to-beam

Topics:
• Shear connections: single and double angle cleats
• Fin plate and flexible end plate connections
• Moment connections: extended end plates, haunches
• T-stub connection design for tension
• Eccentrically loaded bolt groups
• Prying action and stiffener requirements
• Beam-to-column and beam-to-beam details
• Connection ductility and rotation capacity

Day 5: Base Plate and Column Splice Design

Objectives:
• Design base plates for axial load and moment
• Calculate anchor bolt forces and embedment
• Design column splices for compression and tension
• Apply grouting and levelling requirements
• Understand erection and alignment considerations

Topics:
• Base plate types: pinned and fixed
• Base plate design for concentric axial load
• Base plate design for combined axial and moment
• Anchor bolt design: tension, shear, and pullout
• Grouting and levelling procedures
• Column splice types: bearing and non-bearing
• Splice design for axial compression and tension
• Erection tolerances and alignment

Day 6: Bracing and Truss Connections

Objectives:
• Design gusset plate connections for bracing
• Calculate connection forces in truss joints
• Apply slenderness and buckling considerations
• Detail connections for seismic and wind loads
• Understand tension-only and tension-compression bracing

Topics:
• Types of bracing: X, V, inverted V, K
• Gusset plate design: Whitmore section, block shear
• Truss joint design: welded and bolted
• Eccentricity and secondary moments
• Slenderness of bracing members
• Seismic design considerations for connections
• Wind load effects on bracing connections
• Fatigue design for cyclic loading

Day 7: Connection Design for Tubular and Hollow Sections

Objectives:
• Design welded joints for circular and rectangular hollow sections
• Apply chord face and punching shear checks
• Understand stiffening and reinforcement methods
• Use CIDECT and IIW design guides
• Detail connections for Vierendeel trusses

Topics:
• Hollow section properties and grades
• Welded joints: T-, Y-, X-, K-connections
• Chord face failure, punching shear, and local buckling
• Stiffening with internal plates and rings
• Bolted connections for hollow sections

Day 8: Integration, Quality Assurance, and Practical Application

• Integrate connection design into complete structural systems
• Apply quality assurance and inspection procedures
• Use connection design software effectively
• Interpret test results and revise designs
• Prepare connection design documentation

• Connection design workflow from analysis to detailing
• Quality assurance: material certification, weld procedures

Practicals

24 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practicals are essential to develop competence in connection detailing, installation procedures, and quality control. Learners will perform bolt tightening, weld inspection, and connection assembly exercises to apply design principles in a workshop environment.

Practical Activities
  • Bolted Connection Assembly and Torque Testing — Learners assemble bolted connections using torque wrenches, measure preload, and verify slip resistance. (6h)
  • Weld Preparation and Visual Inspection — Learners prepare weld joints, perform fillet welds under supervision, and conduct visual inspection for defects. (6h)
  • Base Plate and Anchor Bolt Installation — Learners set out base plates, install anchor bolts, and grout base plates to simulate field conditions. (6h)
  • Connection Design and Detailing Exercise — Learners design a bolted moment connection using provided loads, then produce a detailed sketch and check against standards. (6h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
