Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, basic knowledge of construction processes is beneficial.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Structural Construction and Materials

Objectives:
• Understand the scope and importance of structural construction methods
• Identify common construction materials and their properties
• Explain basic structural principles and load paths
• Recognise safety considerations in structural construction

• Overview of structural construction in the built environment
• Types of loads (dead, live, wind, seismic) and load paths
• Properties of concrete, steel, timber, and masonry
• Introduction to structural drawings and specifications
• Health and safety regulations relevant to structural work
• Roles and responsibilities of construction team members

Day 2: Concrete Construction Methods

Objectives:
• Describe concrete mix design and quality control
• Explain formwork types and installation
• Outline reinforcement placement and tying
• Understand concrete placement, compaction, and curing

Topics:
• Concrete materials and mix proportions
• Formwork systems: traditional, engineered, and slip forms
• Reinforcement detailing and fixing
• Ready-mix concrete delivery and pumping
• Placing, compacting, and finishing concrete
• Curing methods and quality assurance
• Common defects and remedial measures

Day 3: Steel and Metal Construction

Objectives:
• Identify steel sections and their applications
• Explain bolted and welded connections
• Describe erection sequences for steel frames
• Understand fire protection and corrosion prevention

• Structural steel shapes and grades
• Bolted connections: types, installation, and torque
• Welded connections: processes and inspection
• Erection of steel frames: cranes, rigging, and safety
• Composite steel-concrete construction
• Protective coatings and fireproofing

Day 4: Timber and Masonry Construction

Objectives:
• Differentiate timber types and engineered wood products
• Explain timber framing and connection methods
• Describe masonry units, bonds, and mortar
• Understand reinforcement in masonry walls

• Timber species, grading, and preservation
• Engineered wood: glulam, LVL, cross-laminated timber
• Timber frame connections: nails, screws, bolts, and plates
• Masonry units: clay bricks, concrete blocks, stone
• Mortar types and properties
• Brick and block bonding patterns
• Reinforced masonry and lintels
• Movement joints and damp-proof courses

Day 5: Foundations and Earthworks

Objectives:
• Classify shallow and deep foundations
• Explain soil investigation and bearing capacity
• Describe excavation and shoring methods
• Outline foundation construction for different structures

• Soil types and site investigation
• Bearing capacity and settlement
• Shallow foundations: strip, pad, raft
• Deep foundations: piles, caissons
• Excavation support: shoring, sheet piling, dewatering
• Foundation waterproofing and drainage
• Underpinning techniques
• Quality control in foundation construction

Day 6: Precast, Prestressed, and Advanced Construction Methods

Objectives:
• Explain precast concrete production and erection
• Describe prestressing principles and applications
• Understand modular and off-site construction
• Explore innovative methods like 3D printing and tensioned fabric

Topics:
• Precast concrete elements: beams, columns, panels
• Prestressing: pretensioning and post-tensioning
• Modular construction and volumetric units
• Tilt-up construction
• Tensioned fabric structures
• 3D printing in construction
• Advantages and limitations of advanced methods
• Case studies of innovative projects

Day 7: Construction Integration, Quality Control, and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Integrate knowledge from previous days into a coherent construction plan
• Apply quality control and inspection procedures
• Conduct a practical exercise in structural assembly or inspection
• Prepare a construction method statement

• Quality assurance and control plans
• Non-destructive testing techniques
• Safety during structural construction
• Site logistics and sequencing

• Practical exercise: assemble a small-scale steel frame or concrete formwork

Overview

Practical sessions reinforce theoretical knowledge through hands-on activities in concrete formwork assembly, steel connection installation, and masonry bonding. Learners apply inspection techniques and quality control measures in a simulated construction environment.

Practical Activities
  • Concrete Formwork and Reinforcement — Learners assemble a small formwork system, cut and tie reinforcement bars, and cast a concrete slab, then perform slump tests and curing procedures. (8h)
  • Steel Connection and Erection — Learners bolt and weld steel beams to columns, use a torque wrench, and erect a small frame with a mobile crane under supervision. (8h)
  • Masonry Wall Construction and Inspection — Learners lay bricks in English bond, install wall ties and damp-proof course, and inspect the finished wall for alignment and plumbness. (8h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
