This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to effectively monitor and control the use of prefabricated aluminium alloy scaffolding in compliance with South African health and safety regulations. Participants will learn to inspect, erect, and dismantle scaffolding safely, identify hazards, and implement control measures to prevent accidents. The course ensures competence in managing scaffolding operations on construction and industrial sites.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Aluminium Alloy Scaffolding and Regulatory Framework

Objectives:
• Understand the properties and advantages of aluminium alloy scaffolding.
• Identify relevant SAQA unit standards and legal requirements.
• Explain the roles and responsibilities of scaffolding personnel.
• Recognise basic scaffolding components and their functions.

Topics:
• Overview of aluminium alloy scaffolding: materials, properties, and applications.
• South African legislative framework: OHSA, SANS 10085-1, and SANS 10085-2.
• SAQA unit standard 243274: outcomes and assessment criteria.
• Roles and responsibilities: competent person, erector, inspector, user.
• Scaffolding components: tubes, couplers, base plates, ladders, platforms.
• Introduction to load classifications and safe working loads.

Day 2: Scaffolding Design, Load Calculations, and Stability Principles

Objectives:
• Explain design principles for aluminium alloy scaffolding.
• Perform basic load calculations including dead, live, and environmental loads.
• Understand stability requirements and bracing configurations.
• Interpret scaffold design drawings and specifications.

Topics:
• Design principles: strength, stiffness, stability.
• Load calculations: dead load, live load, wind load, snow load (where applicable).
• Stability: overturning, sliding, and buckling prevention.
• Bracing systems: longitudinal, transverse, and plan bracing.
• Reading and interpreting scaffold design drawings.
• Factors affecting scaffold capacity: span, bay length, height.

Day 3: Erection, Dismantling, and Alteration Procedures

Objectives:
• Describe safe erection and dismantling procedures.
• Identify correct sequence of assembly and disassembly.
• Apply fall protection and edge protection measures.
• Demonstrate understanding of alteration and modification protocols.

Topics:
• Pre-erection checks: ground conditions, component inspection.
• Erection sequence: base, frames, bracing, platforms, guardrails.
• Dismantling sequence: reverse order, safe lowering of components.
• Fall protection: personal protective equipment, anchor points, lifelines.
• Edge protection: handrails, toe boards, mesh.
• Alterations: adding/removing components, re-bracing, load changes.
• Tagging and handover procedures.

Day 4: Inspection, Monitoring, and Control Systems

Objectives:
• Conduct thorough inspections before use, after erection, and periodically.
• Identify defects, damage, and wear in aluminium components.
• Implement monitoring and control measures for scaffold safety.
• Complete inspection reports and maintain records.

Topics:
• Inspection types: initial, pre-use, weekly, and post-event.
• Component inspection: cracks, dents, corrosion, deformation.
• Checking connections: couplers, wedges, pins.
• Monitoring: load monitoring, movement detection (e.g., plumb checks).
• Control measures: access control, load limits, exclusion zones.
• Documentation: inspection checklists, reports, tagging systems.
• Non-destructive testing methods for aluminium.

Day 5: Emergency Procedures, Risk Management, and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Develop and apply emergency response plans for scaffold incidents.
• Conduct risk assessments and implement control measures.
• Integrate all knowledge into a comprehensive scaffold management plan.
• Prepare for summative assessment.

Topics:
• Emergency procedures: collapse, electrical contact, falling objects.
• Rescue planning: rescue equipment, evacuation routes.
• Risk assessment: hazard identification, risk rating, control hierarchy.
• Scaffold management plan: roles, inspections, maintenance, records.
• Case studies of scaffold failures and lessons learned.
• Review of key concepts and assessment preparation.

Practicals

Overview

The practicals provide hands-on experience in erecting, inspecting, and dismantling aluminium alloy scaffolding under supervision. Learners apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, developing competence in safe work practices and control measures.

Practical Activities
  • Component Identification and Inspection — Learners identify and inspect various aluminium scaffold components for defects, using checklists and measuring tools. (3h)
  • Scaffold Erection and Dismantling — Learners erect a scaffold structure following design drawings, then dismantle it safely, applying fall protection and edge protection. (6h)
  • Load Testing and Stability Checks — Learners conduct load tests and stability checks on erected scaffold, measuring deflection and verifying compliance with specifications. (3h)
  • Inspection and Tagging — Learners perform a comprehensive inspection of an erected scaffold, complete a report, and attach appropriate tags. (2h)
  • Emergency Scenario Simulation — Learners respond to a simulated scaffold emergency (e.g., partial collapse or fall) and execute the emergency plan. (2h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
