This course provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills to safely perform a limited range of rope access tasks and rescues. It covers essential rope access techniques, safety procedures, and rescue operations in accordance with South African regulations and industry standards. Successful completion enables learners to work as part of a rope access team at Level 1.
This course is designed for individuals seeking entry-level certification in rope access, including construction workers, inspectors, maintenance technicians, and safety officers who need to perform tasks at height.
Valid certification in working at height or fall protection (preferred but not mandatory).
Objectives:
• Understand the scope and limitations of Rope Access Level 1 work.
• Identify relevant legislation, standards, and SAQA requirements.
• Demonstrate correct selection and inspection of personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Perform basic knots and anchor systems.
• Apply safe work procedures and risk assessment principles.
Topics:
• Introduction to rope access: history, applications, and level 1 scope
• Relevant legislation: OHS Act, SANS standards, and industry codes
• Personal protective equipment: harnesses, helmets, lanyards, and connectors
• Rope selection, care, and inspection
• Basic knots: figure-8, double fisherman, tape knot, and stopper knots
• Anchor systems: natural and artificial anchors, equalization
• Risk assessment and safe work procedures
• Emergency procedures and communication protocols
Objectives:
• Demonstrate correct use of ascenders, descenders, and backup devices.
• Perform safe ascent and descent on a single rope.
• Execute rope-to-rope transfers and passing knots.
• Apply work positioning techniques for hands-free work.
• Conduct buddy checks and equipment inspections.
Topics:
• Mechanical devices: hand ascenders, chest ascenders, descenders (e.g., Stop, I'D), and backup devices (e.g., ASAP, Shunt)
• Ascending techniques: footlocking, mechanical ascenders
• Descending techniques: controlled descent, stopping mid-rope
• Rope-to-rope transfers and passing knots
• Work positioning: lanyards, Y-hang, and tensioned lines
• Buddy checks and daily equipment inspection
• Fall factor and force calculations
• Communication signals and rope management
Objectives:
• Plan and execute a basic rescue from height.
• Demonstrate rescue techniques: lowering, raising, and pick-off rescues.
• Apply casualty care and immobilization principles.
• Coordinate team roles during a rescue scenario.
• Complete a simulated rescue within time and safety constraints.
Topics:
• Rescue principles: hierarchy of rescue, prioritization of safety
• Rescue equipment: rescue kits, stretchers, and casualty bags
• Lowering rescue: controlled descent of casualty
• Raising rescue: mechanical advantage systems (3:1, 5:1)
• Pick-off rescue: transferring a casualty from their rope to rescuer's system
• Casualty care: immobilization, communication, and packaging
• Team roles: rescuer, attendant, and safety officer
• Practical assessment: simulated rescue scenario
Practical sessions are integral to this course, allowing learners to apply rope access techniques and rescue procedures under supervision. Hands-on practice ensures competence in equipment use, safe work practices, and emergency response.
Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.
Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.
Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.
On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.
