Data Collection Management for Transport Planning Training

SAQA US 244243 | NQF 5 | Credits 8 | Duration 5 Days
From $1,242 per delegate

Description

This course equips transport planning professionals with the skills to manage the entire data collection process, from planning and design to execution and quality assurance. Participants will learn to select appropriate data collection methods, manage field teams, and ensure data integrity for informed transport decisions.

Learning Outcomes

  • Plan a data collection process for transport planning, including defining objectives, scope, and resource requirements.
  • Design data collection instruments and select appropriate methods (e.g., surveys, traffic counts, GPS tracking) for specific transport planning needs.
  • Implement data collection activities, managing field teams and ensuring adherence to ethical and safety standards.
  • Monitor data quality throughout the collection process, applying validation and verification techniques.
  • Analyze collected data to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies relevant to transport planning.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the data collection process and recommend improvements for future projects.

Target Audience

Transport planners, data managers, and logistics coordinators involved in collecting and processing transport data for planning purposes.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Data Collection in Transport Planning

Objectives:
• Understand the role of data collection in transport planning
• Identify different types of transport data and their sources
• Recognise ethical and legal considerations in data collection
• Outline the data collection process and key stakeholders

Topics:
• Overview of transport planning and data needs
• Types of transport data: traffic counts, travel surveys, GPS data
• Sources of data: primary vs secondary, manual vs automated
• Ethical considerations and data privacy laws (POPIA)
• Stakeholder roles in data collection
• Introduction to the data collection lifecycle

Day 2: Data Collection Methods and Techniques

Objectives:
• Compare manual and automated data collection methods
• Apply sampling techniques for transport surveys
• Design survey instruments for travel behaviour
• Use technology for data collection (e.g., GPS, sensors)

Topics:
• Manual methods: traffic counts, roadside interviews
• Automated methods: loop detectors, cameras, Bluetooth sensors
• Sampling strategies: random, stratified, cluster
• Survey design: questionnaires, travel diaries
• Using GPS and mobile phone data
• Quality assurance in data collection

Day 3: Data Management and Quality Control

Objectives:
• Implement data entry and validation procedures

• Apply quality control measures to ensure data accuracy
• Handle missing or inconsistent data

Topics:
• Data entry methods and software tools
• Data validation techniques: range checks, logic checks
• Database management for transport data
• Data cleaning and imputation methods
• Metadata and documentation standards
• Data security and backup procedures

Day 4: Data Analysis and Interpretation for Transport Planning

Objectives:
• Perform basic statistical analysis on transport data
• Interpret data to identify traffic patterns and trends
• Use data visualisation tools for reporting
• Apply findings to inform transport planning decisions

Topics:
• Descriptive statistics: mean, median, mode, standard deviation
• Time-series analysis and trend identification
• Spatial analysis and mapping using GIS
• Data visualisation: charts, graphs, dashboards
• Interpreting results for transport planning
• Case studies: using data to solve transport problems

Day 5: Practical Integration and Reporting

Objectives:
• Synthesise data collection and analysis into a coherent report
• Present findings to stakeholders effectively
• Evaluate data collection processes for improvement
• Develop a data collection plan for a transport project

Topics:
• Report writing for transport data
• Presenting data to non-technical audiences
• Ethics and communication in reporting
• Evaluating data collection effectiveness
• Developing a comprehensive data collection plan
• Course review and assessment

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

The practicals provide hands-on experience with data collection instruments, data entry, and analysis software. Learners will conduct simulated traffic counts, design and administer a travel survey, clean and analyse real-world transport data, and present their findings in a report.

Practical Activities
  • Traffic Count Simulation — Learners use manual counters and video recording to conduct a traffic count at a simulated intersection, recording vehicle classifications and volumes. (4h)
  • Travel Survey Design and Administration — Learners design a short travel survey questionnaire, administer it to peers, and collect responses using paper and electronic methods. (4h)
  • Data Cleaning and Analysis — Using a provided dataset, learners clean data (handle missing values, outliers), perform basic statistical analysis, and create visualisations in Excel or similar software. (4h)
  • Data Collection Plan and Presentation — In groups, learners develop a data collection plan for a real-world transport scenario and present their plan to the class for feedback. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
