Day 1: Introduction to Transport Planning and Information Analysis

Day 2: Data Collection Methods and Techniques

Objectives:
• Describe various primary and secondary data collection methods
• Select appropriate methods for different transport planning scenarios
• Understand sampling techniques and survey design
• Apply basic data collection protocols

• Secondary data sources: census, administrative data

Day 3: Data Management and Storage

• Organise raw data into usable formats
• Use spreadsheets and databases for data storage

Day 5: Spatial Analysis and GIS Basics

Day 6: Traffic Flow Theory and Analysis

• Explain fundamental traffic flow parameters
• Analyse traffic data using speed-flow-density relationships

Day 7: Travel Demand Modelling

Day 9: Transport Impact Assessments

• Analyse trip generation rates for land uses

Day 10: Data Analysis for Safety and Environmental Planning

Practicals

36 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Practical sessions allow learners to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world transport data using software tools (Excel, GIS) and conduct field data collection. These hands-on activities reinforce data analysis, spatial mapping, and communication skills essential for transport planning professionals.

Practical Activities
  • Data Collection and Management Practical — Learners conduct a traffic count at a designated intersection, enter data into Excel, clean and validate the dataset, and create a data dictionary. (8h)
  • GIS Mapping and Spatial Analysis Practical — Using QGIS, learners map traffic count data, perform spatial queries to identify high-accident zones, and produce thematic maps for a study area. (8h)
  • Traffic Flow and Demand Analysis Practical — Learners analyse traffic count data to compute speed-flow-density relationships, estimate capacity, and apply a simple trip distribution model using Excel. (8h)
  • Transport Impact Assessment Practical — Given a proposed development, learners estimate trip generation, assess site access, and prepare a mini-TIA report with recommendations. (6h)
  • Data Communication and Presentation Practical — Learners create a dashboard in Excel or Power BI summarising key findings from the integrated project, and deliver a 10-minute presentation to peers. (6h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
