Course Outline

Day 1: Feeder Breaker Operation and Coal Feeding Techniques

Objectives:
• Understand the operational principles and components of a feeder breaker.
• Demonstrate safe startup, shutdown, and emergency procedures.
• Apply correct coal feeding techniques to optimize throughput and minimize blockages.
• Perform routine inspections and basic adjustments for consistent performance.
• Identify common operational faults and implement corrective actions.

Topics:
• Overview of feeder breaker design, components, and function in coal handling.
• Pre-start checks, safety protocols, and lock-out/tag-out procedures.
• Coal feeding techniques: controlled feed rate, material size management, and avoiding jams.
• Operational adjustments: breaker speed, gap settings, and feeder speed control.
• Monitoring key performance indicators: throughput, power draw, and material consistency.
• Common operational issues: blockages, overloads, wear, and spillage.
• Routine maintenance tasks: greasing, belt tensioning, and inspection of wear parts.
• Shift handover and reporting procedures.

Practicals

Overview

Hands-on practical sessions allow learners to apply theoretical knowledge in a simulated or real feeder breaker environment. Learners will perform pre-start checks, operate the equipment under supervision, practice coal feeding adjustments, and troubleshoot common faults.

Practical Activities
  • Pre-Start Inspection and Safety Checks — Learners conduct a complete pre-start inspection of the feeder breaker, verifying safety guards, emergency stops, and fluid levels, and complete a checklist. (1h)
  • Coal Feeding and Operational Adjustment — Under supervision, learners operate the feeder breaker, adjust feeder speed and breaker gap, and monitor throughput to achieve optimal feeding without blockages. (1h)
  • Fault Identification and Troubleshooting — Learners diagnose common faults (e.g., overload, spillage, unusual noise) and perform corrective actions under guidance, including basic adjustments and reporting. (1h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
