Course Outline

Day 1: Fundamentals of Tactical Foot Movement

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of tactical foot movement in a team context.
• Identify the roles and responsibilities within a tactical team.
• Recognise the importance of communication and signals during movement.
• Apply basic movement formations (e.g., file, wedge).

Topics:
• Introduction to tactical movement concepts
• Team roles: point, slack, drag, and cover
• Hand and arm signals for silent communication
• Basic formations: single file, staggered file, wedge
• Principles of stealth and noise discipline
• Terrain appreciation and route selection
• Safety briefings and risk assessment
• Practical exercise: forming up and basic movement

Day 2: Team Formations and Transition Drills

Objectives:
• Execute various team formations effectively.
• Perform smooth transitions between formations.
• Demonstrate proper spacing and interval control.
• Apply cover and concealment techniques during movement.

Topics:
• Review of Day 1 fundamentals
• Advanced formations: diamond, Y-formation, line abreast
• Transition drills: file to wedge, wedge to line
• Interval and spacing control techniques
• Use of terrain for cover and concealment
• Reaction to contact drills: immediate action drills
• Communication under stress
• Practical exercise: formation transitions

Day 3: Tactical Movement in Urban Environments

Objectives:
• Adapt movement techniques for urban settings.
• Navigate obstacles such as walls, fences, and buildings.
• Conduct corner clearance and room entry procedures.
• Integrate urban camouflage and noise discipline.

Topics:
• Urban terrain analysis
• Moving along walls and through alleys
• Corner clearance techniques: pie-ing, slicing the pie
• Room entry basics: dynamic and deliberate entries
• Urban camouflage and concealment
• Noise and light discipline in built-up areas
• Communication in urban environments
• Practical exercise: urban movement course

Day 4: Movement in Open and Rural Terrain

Objectives:
• Apply movement techniques across open ground.
• Use natural cover and concealment effectively.
• Navigate using terrain features and compass.
• Execute crossing of danger areas (e.g., roads, open fields).

Topics:
• Open terrain movement: bounding overwatch, travelling overwatch
• Use of folds in the ground for cover
• Navigation techniques: map reading, compass use, GPS
• Crossing danger areas: roads, rivers, open spaces
• Camouflage and concealment in rural settings
• Team communication over distance
• Observation and listening halt drills
• Practical exercise: rural movement scenario

Day 5: Night and Low-Light Movement

Objectives:
• Adapt movement techniques for night operations.
• Use night vision devices and tactical lights.
• Maintain formation integrity in low-light conditions.
• Conduct silent movement and communication at night.

Topics:
• Night adaptation techniques: dark adaptation, red light use
• Use of night vision goggles (NVGs) and thermal devices
• Tactical light techniques: white light discipline
• Night movement formations and intervals
• Noise discipline and stealth at night
• Communication: light signals, infrared markers
• Navigation at night using landmarks and compass
• Practical exercise: night movement patrol

Day 6: Advanced Tactical Drills and Contact Drills

Objectives:
• Execute immediate action drills for various contact scenarios.
• Perform break contact and extraction procedures.
• Apply tactical combat casualty care (TCCC) during movement.
• Integrate fire and movement techniques.

Topics:
• Immediate action drills: contact front, contact flank, contact rear
• Break contact drills: bound away, peel, and extraction
• Fire and movement: bounding overwatch, fire teams
• Tactical combat casualty care basics: tourniquet, wound packing
• Casualty evacuation under fire
• Communication during contact: contact reports
• Reorganisation after contact
• Practical exercise: contact scenario with medical component

Day 7: Scenario-Based Team Movement Exercise

Objectives:
• Apply all learned skills in a realistic scenario.
• Coordinate team movement through complex terrain.
• React to simulated threats and obstacles.
• Demonstrate effective communication and leadership.

Topics:
• Scenario brief: mission objectives, enemy situation
• Route planning and risk assessment
• Movement through mixed terrain (urban, rural)
• Reacting to ambush and sniper fire
• Navigating obstacles with time constraints
• Casualty evacuation and medical care
• After-action review (AAR) procedures
• Full-day practical exercise: tactical patrol mission

Day 8: Final Assessment and Integration

Objectives:
• Successfully complete a final team movement exercise.
• Demonstrate proficiency in all tactical movement techniques.
• Evaluate team performance through AAR.
• Receive feedback and certification.

• Final exercise: multi-phase tactical movement operation
• Performance evaluation against unit standard criteria
• Team AAR: strengths, areas for improvement
• Individual feedback and coaching
• Review of key concepts and skills
• Written assessment (if required)
• Certification and unit standard credit awarding

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
