Description

This course equips learners with the skills to critically evaluate pastoral care models and their practical application. Participants will learn to assess the effectiveness of different pastoral care approaches and implement evidence-based improvements. The training is designed to enhance the quality of pastoral care services in diverse community and institutional settings.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Pastoral Care Models and Evaluation Frameworks

Objectives:
• Define pastoral care and its role in community support contexts
• Identify key historical and contemporary pastoral care models
• Describe the purpose and components of practice evaluation in pastoral care
• Understand the scope and requirements of Unit Standard 115999

Topics:
• Overview of pastoral care: definitions, principles, and ethical foundations
• Historical development of pastoral care models
• Introduction to evaluation frameworks: formative, summative, and outcomes-based
• Overview of Unit Standard 115999: outcomes, assessment criteria, and portfolio requirements
• Case study: identifying pastoral care needs in a local community

Day 2: Foundational Pastoral Care Models

Objectives:
• Explain the core tenets of the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) model
• Describe the narrative pastoral care approach and its applications
• Analyse the strengths and limitations of the crisis intervention model
• Compare different models based on context and client population

Topics:
• Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE): process, supervision, and reflective practice
• Narrative pastoral care: storytelling, meaning-making, and identity reconstruction
• Crisis intervention model: assessment, intervention, and referral
• Comparative analysis of models using case examples
• Practical exercise: identifying appropriate models for given scenarios

Day 3: Advanced and Specialised Pastoral Care Models

Objectives:
• Evaluate the systemic pastoral care model for family and community contexts
• Apply the strengths-based pastoral counselling approach
• Integrate trauma-informed care principles into pastoral practice
• Develop a contextual adaptation of a pastoral care model

Topics:
• Systemic pastoral care: family systems theory and network mapping
• Strengths-based pastoral counselling: asset mapping and resilience building
• Trauma-informed pastoral care: safety, trust, choice, collaboration, empowerment
• Contextual adaptation: African Ubuntu perspectives and cultural sensitivity
• Small group workshop: designing a model for a specific setting (e.g., hospital, prison, school)

Day 4: Practice Evaluation Methodologies

Objectives:
• Distinguish between quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods in pastoral care
• Design evaluation tools such as surveys, interviews, and observation checklists
• Apply ethical considerations in evaluating pastoral care interventions
• Interpret evaluation data to inform practice improvement

• Quantitative methods: surveys, scales, and statistical basics
• Qualitative methods: interviews, focus groups, thematic analysis
• Mixed-methods approaches and triangulation
• Ethical evaluation: confidentiality, informed consent, and cultural competence
• Practical session: developing an evaluation tool for a pastoral care programme

Day 5: Implementing Evaluation in Pastoral Care Practice

Objectives:
• Create a logic model linking inputs, activities, outputs, and outcomes
• Conduct a basic needs assessment for a pastoral care programme
• Use reflection and feedback loops to adjust interventions
• Document evaluation findings for accountability and learning

Topics:
• Logic models: theory of change and programme design
• Needs assessment: methods and tools for community mapping
• Reflective practice: journaling, peer feedback, and supervision
• Documentation: reporting templates, case notes, and outcome records
• Role-play: conducting an evaluation interview with a client

Day 6: Analysing and Reporting Evaluation Results

Objectives:
• Analyse evaluation data to identify trends, gaps, and successes
• Write a professional evaluation report for stakeholders
• Present evaluation findings to diverse audiences
• Use evaluation results to advocate for resources and policy change

Topics:
• Data analysis: coding, categorising, and synthesising findings
• Writing evaluation reports: structure, language, and recommendations
• Visual presentation: graphs, infographics, and summary tables
• Stakeholder communication: tailoring messages for funders, management, and community
• Case study: presenting findings to a church council or NGO board

Day 7: Integration, Portfolio Development, and Action Planning

Objectives:
• Integrate learning from all days into a coherent personal practice model
• Compile a portfolio of evidence meeting Unit Standard 115999 requirements
• Develop an action plan for ongoing evaluation and professional development
• Demonstrate competence in evaluating pastoral care practice

Topics:
• Integration exercise: creating a personal pastoral care evaluation framework
• Portfolio guidelines: evidence types, formatting, and submission process
• Peer review: sharing and critiquing evaluation frameworks
• Action planning: setting goals for continuous improvement
• Final assessment: presentation of portfolio and Q&A session

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
