This course equips learners with the skills to develop a comprehensive risk management plan for simple to moderately complex projects. Participants will learn to identify, analyse, and respond to project risks, ensuring successful project outcomes within scope, time, and budget constraints.

Learning Outcomes

  • Identify and categorise potential risks in a simple to moderately complex project using established risk identification techniques.
  • Analyse identified risks by assessing their probability and impact using qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Evaluate risk analysis results to prioritise risks requiring immediate attention and develop appropriate response strategies.
  • Design a comprehensive risk management plan that includes risk identification, analysis, response planning, and monitoring procedures.
  • Implement the risk management plan by communicating roles, responsibilities, and risk responses to relevant stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate the ability to monitor and review risks throughout the project lifecycle, adjusting the plan as necessary.

This course is designed for project managers, team leaders, and professionals involved in planning and executing projects in any industry, particularly those managing simple to moderately complex projects.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Project Risk Management

Objectives:
• Understand the concept of risk and risk management in simple projects
• Identify the purpose and benefits of a risk management plan
• Differentiate between types of risks (positive and negative)
• Recognise the role of stakeholders in risk management

Topics:
• Definition of risk and risk management
• Importance of risk management for simple projects
• Overview of the risk management process (identify, analyse, respond, monitor)
• Types of risks: technical, external, organisational, project management
• Stakeholder identification and engagement in risk management

Day 2: Risk Identification and Analysis

Objectives:
• Apply techniques to identify risks in a simple project
• Categorise risks using a risk breakdown structure
• Perform qualitative risk analysis (probability and impact)
• Prioritise risks for further action

Topics:
• Risk identification techniques: brainstorming, checklists, SWOT analysis
• Developing a risk register
• Risk breakdown structure (RBS)
• Qualitative risk analysis: probability and impact scales
• Risk prioritisation and ranking

Day 3: Risk Response Planning and Monitoring

Objectives:
• Develop appropriate risk response strategies
• Allocate risk ownership and document responses
• Understand risk monitoring and control processes
• Learn how to update the risk register during project execution

Topics:
• Risk response strategies: avoid, transfer, mitigate, accept
• Contingency and fallback plans
• Assigning risk owners
• Risk monitoring: triggers, reviews, and reporting
• Updating the risk register and communicating changes

Day 4: Developing a Project Risk Management Plan

Objectives:
• Compile a comprehensive risk management plan for a simple project
• Integrate risk management into overall project planning
• Review and finalise the risk management plan
• Present and justify risk management decisions

Topics:
• Components of a risk management plan: methodology, roles, budget, timing
• Aligning risk plan with project scope, schedule, and cost
• Documenting assumptions and constraints
• Plan approval and baseline establishment
• Final review and presentation of risk management plan

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
