Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, a basic understanding of mathematics is recommended.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Financial Statements and Accounting Concepts

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and users of financial statements.
• Identify the key components of the statement of financial position.
• Differentiate between assets, liabilities, and equity.
• Recognise the structure of the income statement.

Topics:
• Overview of financial accounting and reporting.
• The accounting equation and double-entry bookkeeping.
• Components of the statement of financial position (balance sheet).
• The income statement: revenue, expenses, and profit.
• Accrual vs. cash basis accounting.
• Basic journal entries and ledger accounts.

Day 2: Financial Statement Analysis – Liquidity and Solvency Ratios

Objectives:
• Calculate and interpret liquidity ratios (current ratio, quick ratio).
• Calculate and interpret solvency ratios (debt-to-equity, interest coverage).
• Analyse working capital management.
• Understand the limitations of ratio analysis.

Topics:
• Importance of liquidity in business operations.
• Current ratio, quick ratio, and cash ratio.
• Working capital cycle and turnover ratios.
• Debt-to-equity ratio and gearing.
• Interest coverage ratio and debt service capacity.
• Case study: assessing a company's short-term and long-term financial health.

Day 3: Profitability and Efficiency Ratios

Objectives:
• Calculate profitability ratios (gross profit margin, net profit margin, ROA, ROE).
• Measure operational efficiency using turnover ratios.
• Interpret ratios in the context of industry benchmarks.
• Identify trends using comparative analysis.

Topics:
• Gross profit margin, operating profit margin, net profit margin.
• Return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE).
• Asset turnover, inventory turnover, receivables turnover.
• Days sales outstanding (DSO) and days inventory outstanding (DIO).
• Dupont analysis: decomposing ROE.
• Practical exercise: calculating and interpreting ratios from real financial statements.

Day 4: Cash Flow Analysis and Investment Ratios

Objectives:
• Analyse the statement of cash flows (operating, investing, financing).
• Calculate free cash flow and cash flow adequacy.
• Evaluate investment ratios (EPS, P/E, dividend yield).
• Understand the relationship between cash flow and profitability.

Topics:
• Structure of the cash flow statement.
• Operating cash flow and cash flow from operations.
• Free cash flow: calculation and significance.
• Earnings per share (EPS), price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio.
• Dividend yield, dividend cover, and payout ratio.
• Case study: comparing cash flow performance of two companies.

Day 5: Integrated Financial Analysis and Reporting

Objectives:
• Perform a comprehensive ratio analysis using a real-world case.
• Prepare a written financial analysis report.
• Identify red flags and limitations of financial data.
• Apply ethical considerations in financial reporting.

Topics:
• Steps in a full financial analysis.
• Combining liquidity, solvency, profitability, and efficiency insights.
• Identifying financial distress signals (Altman Z-score).
• Limitations of ratio analysis and non-financial factors.
• Ethics in financial reporting and analysis.
• Group project: present a financial analysis report.

Practicals

Overview

Practical sessions provide hands-on experience in extracting data from financial statements, calculating ratios, and interpreting results. Learners work on real company case studies and use spreadsheet tools to perform analysis.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Extracting Data and Preparing Financial Statements — Learners extract data from trial balances and prepare simplified income statements and balance sheets. (3h)
  • Practical 2: Liquidity and Solvency Ratio Calculation — Using case study financials, learners calculate liquidity and solvency ratios and interpret the results. (4h)
  • Practical 3: Profitability and Efficiency Analysis — Learners calculate profitability and efficiency ratios and compare them against industry benchmarks. (4h)
  • Practical 4: Cash Flow Statement Analysis and Final Report — Learners prepare a cash flow statement from given data and compile a comprehensive ratio analysis report. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
