Target Audience

This course is designed for extension officers, agricultural advisors, community development workers, and supervisors involved in planning, implementing, or evaluating extension services in simple rural or peri-urban settings.

Course Outline

Practicals

Overview

The practicals component allows learners to apply evaluation concepts in simulated field settings. Through hands-on exercises, learners practice data collection, analysis, and reporting, reinforcing the theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom.

Practical Activities

• Designing Data Collection Tools — Learners design a simple questionnaire and interview guide for a given extension service scenario, then pilot them with peers. (4h)
• Conducting Key Informant Interviews — Learners conduct mock key informant interviews with role-players, practicing active listening and note-taking. (5h)
• Data Analysis and Interpretation Workshop — Using sample data from the interviews, learners code qualitative responses and create simple quantitative summaries. (5h)
• Mini Evaluation Simulation — In groups, learners conduct a complete mini evaluation of a simulated extension service, from planning to reporting. (7h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.
