Day 2: Conditioning Theory and Process Parameters

Objectives:
• Explain the physics of moisture absorption and desorption in tobacco
• Define key process parameters: temperature, humidity, residence time

• Apply principles of heat and mass transfer to conditioning

Overview

Practical sessions are essential for learners to develop hands-on skills in operating conditioning equipment, performing moisture analysis, and troubleshooting process issues. These supervised exercises reinforce theoretical knowledge and ensure competency in real-world processing environments.

Practical Activities
  • Equipment Familiarisation and Pre-Start Checks — Learners identify major components of conditioning cylinders and steam chambers, perform pre-start inspections, and complete start-up procedures under supervision. (4h)
  • Process Parameter Monitoring and Adjustment — Learners monitor temperature, humidity, and feed rate using control panels and handheld instruments, then adjust parameters to meet target moisture specifications. (6h)
  • Moisture Testing and Quality Control — Learners collect samples from conditioned tobacco, perform oven-dry moisture tests, and record results. They compare against specifications and suggest corrective actions. (4h)
  • Troubleshooting and Fault Diagnosis — Learners respond to simulated faults such as uneven moisture, steam leaks, or blockages. They apply root cause analysis and implement corrective actions. (6h)
  • Integrated Process Operation and Shutdown — Learners operate the conditioning line from start to finish, including coordination with downstream processes, then perform proper shutdown and cleaning. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
