SAQA US 110500 | NQF 5 | Credits 6 | Duration 3 Days
From $967 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the skills to design, set up, and manage a local economic development (LED) database using appropriate software. Participants will learn to capture, store, and retrieve data to support economic planning and decision-making at the local level.

Learning Outcomes

  • Design a database structure to meet local economic development data requirements.
  • Implement a database using appropriate software, including table creation, data entry, and validation.
  • Apply data management techniques to ensure data integrity, security, and accessibility.
  • Analyze and interpret LED data to generate reports that inform decision-making.
  • Evaluate database performance and apply basic troubleshooting and maintenance procedures.
  • Demonstrate compliance with relevant data protection and ethical standards.

Target Audience

Economic development practitioners, local government officials, project managers, and data administrators involved in LED initiatives who need to establish and maintain a functional database.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Local Economic Development Databases

Objectives:
• Understand the concepts of Local Economic Development (LED) and the role of data.
• Identify key data sources and types relevant to LED.
• Learn the principles of database design and structure.
• Plan a simple LED database schema.

Topics:
• Introduction to Local Economic Development (LED) and data-driven decision making.
• Types of LED data: demographic, economic, infrastructure, and environmental.
• Overview of database management systems (DBMS) and their features.
• Database design principles: tables, fields, relationships, and normalization.
• Identifying stakeholders and data requirements for LED.
• Hands-on: Creating a conceptual data model for a local LED database.

Day 2: Software Setup and Database Implementation

Objectives:
• Install and configure database software suitable for LED.
• Create tables, define fields, and set relationships.
• Import and clean LED data from various sources.
• Perform basic queries to extract useful information.

Topics:
• Selecting appropriate software: MS Access, MySQL, or SQLite.
• Step-by-step installation and configuration of chosen database software.
• Creating database tables with appropriate data types and constraints.
• Importing data from CSV, Excel, and other formats.
• Data cleaning techniques: handling missing values, duplicates, and inconsistencies.
• Writing basic SQL queries: SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE, DELETE.
• Hands-on: Building a functional LED database with sample data.

Day 3: Advanced Features and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Design user-friendly forms and reports for data entry and analysis.
• Implement data validation and security measures.
• Integrate the database with other tools for analysis and visualization.
• Develop a simple dashboard for monitoring LED indicators.

Topics:
• Creating forms for data entry and editing.
• Designing reports for summarizing LED metrics.
• Implementing data validation rules and user permissions.
• Connecting the database to analysis tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI).
• Building a simple dashboard with key LED indicators.
• Testing and troubleshooting the database.
• Best practices for maintaining and updating the LED database.
• Hands-on: Finalizing a complete LED database with forms, reports, and dashboard.

Practicals

12 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Practical sessions are integral to this course, allowing learners to apply theoretical knowledge by setting up a real LED database. Learners will install software, design tables, import data, and create forms and reports, culminating in a functional database project.

Practical Activities
  • Database Design and Schema Creation — Learners create a conceptual data model and implement it in software by defining tables, fields, and relationships. (3h)
  • Data Import and Cleaning — Learners import sample LED data from various file formats and perform cleaning operations to ensure data quality. (3h)
  • Querying and Reporting — Learners write SQL queries to extract insights and create reports summarizing LED indicators. (3h)
  • Forms and Dashboard Development — Learners design user-friendly forms for data entry and a simple dashboard to visualize key LED metrics. (3h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
