Description

This course equips learners with the specialist knowledge and skills required to underwrite high-risk commercial and industrial insurance policies in the short-term insurance market. Day 2: Risk Assessment and Analysis

Day 3: Underwriting Principles and Guidelines

• Document underwriting decisions effectively.

Day 4: Specialized High Risk Classes

Day 5: Claims Management and Loss Adjustment

• Understand the claims process and its impact on underwriting.

• Apply lessons learned from claims to risk selection.
• Communicate effectively with claims adjusters and brokers.

• Integrate all learning into a comprehensive underwriting plan.

Overview

Practicals provide hands-on experience in risk assessment, underwriting decision-making, and portfolio analysis. Learners apply theoretical knowledge to realistic scenarios using case studies, data analysis tools, and role-play exercises.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Risk Assessment Walkthrough — Learners conduct a virtual site inspection of a manufacturing facility, identify hazards, and complete a risk assessment matrix. (6h)
  • Practical 2: Underwriting a High Risk Property — Using a simulated submission, learners evaluate information, apply underwriting guidelines, and calculate a premium. (6h)
  • Practical 3: Claims Analysis and Portfolio Adjustment — Learners review a claims portfolio, identify trends, and recommend underwriting actions to improve profitability. (5h)
  • Practical 4: Emerging Risk Scenario Planning — Teams develop an underwriting response to an emerging risk (e.g., cyber attack on industrial control systems). (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
