This course equips SMME owners and managers with the skills to systematically analyse their business environment and appraise their current situation. Participants learn to identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats, and to use this analysis for strategic decision-making and business improvement.

None — open enrollment. Basic literacy and numeracy are recommended.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to SMME Business Analysis and Situation Appraisal

Objectives:
• Understand the role and importance of business analysis in SMMEs
• Define key terms: SMME, business analysis, situation appraisal
• Identify the scope and benefits of systematic situation appraisal
• Recognize the SAQA unit standard requirements for this training

• Overview of SMME landscape in South Africa
• What is business analysis? Scope and purpose
• Introduction to situation appraisal: concepts and frameworks
• Linking business analysis to SMME success
• SAQA unit standard 115811: outcomes and assessment criteria

Day 2: Data Collection and Analysis Techniques

Objectives:
• Apply qualitative and quantitative data collection methods
• Use SWOT analysis for situation appraisal
• Conduct basic environmental scanning (PESTLE)
• Interpret data to identify business strengths and weaknesses

Topics:
• Primary vs secondary data sources
• Surveys, interviews, and observation techniques
• SWOT analysis: practical application
• PESTLE analysis: political, economic, social, technological, legal, environmental
• Data interpretation and reporting

Day 3: Financial Analysis and Performance Measurement

Objectives:
• Analyze financial statements to assess business health
• Calculate key financial ratios (liquidity, profitability, efficiency)
• Use break-even analysis for decision-making
• Identify financial strengths and weaknesses in an SMME

• Income statement, balance sheet, cash flow statement basics
• Financial ratio analysis: current ratio, gross margin, ROE
• Break-even analysis: fixed vs variable costs
• Budgeting and cash flow forecasting
• Common financial pitfalls in SMMEs

Day 4: Market Analysis and Customer Insights

Objectives:
• Conduct market segmentation and target market analysis
• Analyze competitors using competitive intelligence
• Assess customer needs and satisfaction
• Evaluate market trends and opportunities

• Market segmentation: demographic, geographic, psychographic, behavioral
• Competitor analysis: Porter's Five Forces
• Customer surveys and feedback mechanisms
• Trend analysis and market forecasting
• Value proposition development

Day 5: Operational and Process Analysis

Objectives:
• Map business processes to identify inefficiencies
• Analyze supply chain and resource management
• Assess operational risks and controls
• Recommend improvements for operational effectiveness

• Process mapping and flowcharts
• Lean principles: waste reduction
• Supply chain analysis: suppliers, inventory, logistics
• Risk assessment: operational, compliance, reputational
• Key performance indicators (KPIs) for operations

Day 6: Strategic Analysis and Action Planning

Objectives:
• Synthesize findings from previous analyses
• Develop strategic options and evaluate alternatives
• Create a situation appraisal report
• Formulate actionable recommendations

• Prioritization techniques: impact vs effort matrix
• Writing a situation appraisal report: structure and key elements

Day 7: Integration, Presentation, and Assessment

Objectives:
• Present a comprehensive business analysis and situation appraisal
• Defend recommendations with evidence
• Apply learning to a real or simulated SMME case study
• Prepare for unit standard assessment

• Case study: full analysis from data collection to recommendations
• Presentation skills: communicating findings effectively
• Peer review and feedback
• Assessment preparation: portfolio of evidence, knowledge questions

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
