Spatial Orientation Skills for the Workplace Training

SAQA US 259945 | NQF 5 | Credits 8 | Duration 5 Days
From $1,242 per delegate

Description

This course equips learners with the ability to apply spatial orientation skills effectively in the workplace. It focuses on interpreting and using spatial information to navigate environments, arrange workspaces, and enhance operational efficiency. By the end of the course, participants will be able to demonstrate practical spatial awareness in various work contexts.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply spatial orientation principles to navigate familiar and unfamiliar work environments safely and efficiently.
  • Analyse spatial relationships between objects, people, and work areas to optimise workflow and ergonomics.
  • Evaluate spatial information from maps, diagrams, and verbal instructions to plan routes or layouts.
  • Demonstrate the ability to give and follow directions using spatial references and landmarks.
  • Implement strategies to maintain spatial awareness in dynamic or hazardous work settings.
  • Design a simple workspace layout that considers spatial constraints and user requirements.

Target Audience

This course is designed for employees across all industries who need to improve their spatial awareness for tasks such as navigation, layout planning, or equipment operation. It is suitable for new entrants to the workplace as well as experienced workers seeking to enhance their spatial skills.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Spatial Orientation and Basic Concepts

Objectives:
• Define spatial orientation and its importance in the workplace.
• Identify basic spatial terms and concepts (e.g., direction, distance, scale).
• Understand the use of reference points and cardinal directions.
• Apply basic orientation skills to simple workplace scenarios.

Topics:
• What is spatial orientation?
• Key terminology: direction, distance, scale, bearing.
• Cardinal and intercardinal directions.
• Reference points and landmarks.
• Introduction to maps and plans.
• Simple orientation exercises.

Day 2: Reading and Interpreting Maps, Plans, and Diagrams

Objectives:
• Read and interpret different types of maps and plans used in the workplace.
• Understand scale and how to measure distances on a map.
• Identify symbols, legends, and contours.
• Apply map-reading skills to locate features and navigate.

Topics:
• Types of maps: topographic, site plans, floor plans.
• Map scales and distance measurement.
• Symbols, legends, and colour coding.
• Contour lines and relief interpretation.
• Grid references and coordinates.
• Practical exercises with sample plans.

Day 3: Using Compasses and GPS for Navigation

Objectives:
• Understand the principles of magnetic compass navigation.
• Use a compass to take bearings and follow a heading.
• Operate a basic GPS device to obtain coordinates and navigate.
• Integrate compass and GPS skills for accurate positioning.

Topics:
• Parts of a compass and how it works.
• Taking and following bearings.
• Declination and adjustment.
• Introduction to GPS: satellites, coordinates, waypoints.
• Using GPS to navigate to a location.
• Combining compass and GPS techniques.

Day 4: Spatial Orientation in the Workplace Environment

Objectives:
• Apply spatial orientation skills to specific workplace contexts (e.g., construction, mining, logistics).
• Use site plans and safety diagrams to identify hazards and routes.
• Conduct a simple site survey and create a sketch map.
• Demonstrate orientation skills during a simulated workplace task.

Topics:
• Workplace-specific spatial challenges.
• Reading site safety plans and evacuation routes.
• Identifying hazards using spatial awareness.
• Conducting a site survey.
• Creating sketch maps and diagrams.
• Simulated workplace orientation task.

Day 5: Advanced Applications and Integration

Objectives:
• Integrate all spatial orientation skills in a complex workplace scenario.
• Use digital tools (e.g., GIS, smartphone apps) for orientation.
• Trouble-shoot common orientation errors.
• Demonstrate competence in a final practical assessment.

Topics:
• Digital mapping tools and GIS basics.
• Smartphone navigation apps.
• Common errors and how to avoid them.
• Complex scenario: multi-point navigation.
• Final practical assessment.
• Review and certification.

Practicals

16 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practicals reinforce theoretical concepts through real-world application. Learners practice map reading, compass and GPS use, site surveying, and integrated navigation tasks in a controlled outdoor environment.

Practical Activities
  • Map and Plan Reading Exercise — Learners interpret a topographic map and a site plan, measuring distances and identifying features using grid references. (3h)
  • Compass Navigation Course — Learners use a magnetic compass to take bearings and navigate a short course with multiple waypoints. (4h)
  • GPS Waypoint Navigation — Learners program a GPS device with waypoints and navigate to them in an outdoor setting. (3h)
  • Site Survey and Sketch Mapping — Learners conduct a simple site survey using tape and compass, then produce a sketch map of the area. (3h)
  • Integrated Navigation Assessment — Learners complete a complex navigation task using map, compass, and GPS to reach multiple points and report findings. (3h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
