Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Digital Image Editing and Core Concepts

Objectives:
• Understand the digital image editing workflow and key terminology.
• Identify different image file formats and their appropriate uses.
• Navigate the user interface of a standard image editing software.
• Perform basic image adjustments: cropping, resizing, and rotation.
• Apply fundamental colour correction techniques.

• Overview of digital image editing and its applications.
• Image file formats: JPEG, PNG, TIFF, RAW, and their characteristics.
• Introduction to image resolution, pixel dimensions, and colour modes (RGB, CMYK).
• Software interface: toolbars, panels, layers, and workspace customisation.
• Basic image transformations: crop, resize, rotate, and straighten.
• Colour correction basics: brightness, contrast, and colour balance adjustments.
• Saving and exporting images for different purposes.

Day 2: Selections, Layers, and Masking Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Create precise selections using various selection tools.
• Understand the concept of layers and their role in non-destructive editing.
• Apply layer masks to hide or reveal parts of an image.
• Combine multiple images using layers and masks.
• Organise and manage layers effectively.

Topics:
• Selection tools: marquee, lasso, magic wand, and quick selection.
• Refining selections: feather, expand, contract, and edge refinement.
• Introduction to layers: creating, duplicating, reordering, and grouping.
• Layer blending modes and opacity adjustments.
• Layer masks: adding, editing, and using gradients with masks.
• Compositing basics: combining images with masks.
• Practical exercise: creating a simple composite image.

Day 3: Retouching and Restoration Techniques

Objectives:
• Remove blemishes, dust, and unwanted objects using retouching tools.
• Apply healing and cloning techniques to repair damaged images.
• Dodge and burn to enhance tonal areas.
• Use frequency separation for advanced skin retouching.
• Restore old or damaged photographs.

Topics:
• Spot healing brush, healing brush, and patch tool.
• Clone stamp tool: settings and best practices.
• Dodge and burn tools for local tonal adjustments.
• Frequency separation: separating texture from colour.
• Content-aware fill and content-aware move.
• Restoration workflow: scanning, dust removal, scratch repair, and colour correction.
• Practical exercise: retouching a portrait and restoring an old photo.

Day 4: Advanced Colour Grading and Creative Effects

Objectives:
• Apply advanced colour grading using adjustment layers and curves.
• Create and apply creative filters and effects.
• Use layer styles for text and graphic enhancements.
• Work with smart objects for non-destructive filtering.
• Design graphic elements and apply typography.

Topics:
• Adjustment layers: levels, curves, hue/saturation, selective colour, and gradient maps.
• Colour grading techniques: creating moods and looks.
• Filters and effects: blur gallery, distort, and artistic filters.
• Smart objects: converting layers, applying filters non-destructively.
• Layer styles: drop shadow, bevel, stroke, and gradient overlay.
• Adding and formatting text: character and paragraph panels.
• Practical exercise: creating a promotional graphic with text and effects.

Day 5: Workflow Automation, Batch Processing, and Final Project

Objectives:
• Automate repetitive tasks using actions and scripts.
• Batch process multiple images for efficiency.
• Prepare images for web, print, and social media platforms.
• Apply colour management and proofing.
• Complete a comprehensive final project integrating all skills.

Topics:
• Creating and editing actions for automation.
• Batch processing: renaming, resizing, and applying actions to folders.
• Image optimisation for web: file size vs quality.
• Print preparation: resolution, colour profiles, and proofing.
• Exporting for social media: dimensions and formats.
• Final project: brief and requirements.
• Project work session and review.
• Course wrap-up and Q&A.

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
