Day 1: Introduction to Intellectual Property and the IP Process

Objectives:

• Outline the IP lifecycle from creation to commercialisation.
• Differentiate between formal and informal IP protection.

• Overview of IP types: patents, trademarks, copyright, industrial designs, trade secrets.
• The role of IP in the knowledge economy.
• Key stakeholders in IP management: creators, owners, attorneys, regulators.

• Ethical considerations and confidentiality in IP management.

Day 2: Legal Framework and IP Registration Processes

Objectives:
• Understand the legal basis for IP protection in South Africa.
• Describe the registration process for patents, trademarks, and designs.
• Identify the requirements for copyright protection.
• Explain the role of the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC).
• Recognise international treaties and their impact on local IP management.

• South African IP legislation: Patents Act, Trade Marks Act, Copyright Act, Designs Act.
• The registration process: filing, examination, publication, opposition, grant.
• Patentability criteria: novelty, inventive step, industrial applicability.

• Learn about border measures and anti-counterfeiting strategies.

Day 5: IP Management in the Digital Age

• Understand IP challenges in the digital environment.
• Manage IP for software, databases, and digital content.
• Address open source and creative commons licensing.
• Protect IP in social media and e-commerce.
• Recognise data privacy and IP intersections.

• Copyright in digital works: software, multimedia, databases.
• Open source licensing: GPL, MIT, Apache.
• Creative Commons and public domain.
• Digital rights management (DRM).
• IP issues in social media: user-generated content, brand protection.
• E-commerce and trademark use online.
• Data protection and IP: trade secrets, personal data.

Day 6: IP Process Management Systems and Best Practices

Objectives:
• Implement IP process management systems.
• Use technology for IP portfolio tracking.
• Develop IP policies and procedures.
• Manage IP records and documentation.
• Ensure compliance with IP regulations.

• IP management software: features, selection, implementation.
• Documenting IP: invention disclosures, registration records.
• IP policies for organisations: ownership, confidentiality, employee agreements.
• Best practices for IP process management.
• Record keeping and auditing.
• Compliance with regulatory requirements.

Day 7: Capstone Project and Course Review

• Apply all course concepts to a real-world IP scenario.
• Develop a comprehensive IP management plan.
• Present and defend the plan.
• Review key learning outcomes.
• Prepare for unit standard assessment.

• Capstone project brief: develop an IP strategy and process for a given case.

• Review of key concepts from days 1–6.
• Assessment preparation: unit standard 252448 requirements.
• Final assessment (written and/or oral).
• Course evaluation and certification.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
