Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Business Report Writing

Objectives:
• Understand the purpose and types of business reports
• Identify the key elements of a well-structured report
• Apply principles of audience awareness and tone
• Use plain language and avoid common writing errors
• Plan and outline a business report effectively

Topics:
• Introduction to business report writing: purpose, audience, and context
• Types of reports: informational, analytical, progress, and recommendation
• Structure of a report: title page, executive summary, introduction, body, conclusion, recommendations, appendices
• Writing principles: clarity, conciseness, coherence, and correctness
• Plain language and professional tone
• Common grammar, punctuation, and style errors
• Report planning: defining objectives, gathering information, and outlining

Day 2: Writing and Structuring the Report

Objectives:
• Write clear and effective executive summaries and introductions
• Develop logical arguments and present data persuasively
• Use headings, tables, and graphics to enhance readability
• Apply referencing and citation standards
• Draft the main sections of a business report

Topics:
• Writing the executive summary: key components and techniques
• Crafting introductions: context, purpose, and scope
• Developing the body: presenting findings, analysis, and evidence
• Using visual aids: tables, charts, and graphs
• Headings and subheadings for structure
• Integrating data and evidence ethically
• Referencing and citation styles (e.g., Harvard, APA)
• Drafting conclusions and recommendations

Day 3: Editing, Finalising, and Presenting Reports

Objectives:
• Edit and proofread reports for clarity, accuracy, and consistency
• Apply formatting and layout best practices
• Prepare and deliver effective report presentations
• Evaluate reports against quality criteria
• Apply feedback to improve writing

Topics:
• Editing techniques: self-editing and peer review
• Proofreading for grammar, spelling, and punctuation
• Formatting and layout: fonts, margins, spacing, and numbering
• Creating a professional look: cover pages, headers, footers, and table of contents
• Presenting report findings: oral presentation skills
• Handling questions and feedback
• Quality assurance: checklist for final report
• Action planning for continuous improvement

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
