This course equips learners with the competence to plan, implement, and maintain quality management systems (QMS) in both corporate and project environments. It covers core concepts such as quality planning, control, assurance, and continuous improvement, aligned with ISO 9000 principles. By the end, learners will be able to apply quality management tools and techniques to enhance organisational performance.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Quality Management

Objectives:
• Define quality management and its importance in corporate and project contexts.
• Explain the principles of quality management systems (QMS) based on ISO 9000 standards.
• Identify key quality management concepts: quality planning, assurance, control, and improvement.
• Understand the role of leadership and customer focus in QMS.
• Recognise the benefits of implementing a QMS in an organisation.

• Introduction to quality management: definitions, history, and evolution.
• Quality management principles: customer focus, leadership, engagement of people, process approach, improvement, evidence-based decision making, relationship management.
• Overview of ISO 9000 family of standards.
• The Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle.
• Quality policy and objectives.
• Roles and responsibilities in QMS.
• Case study: Successful QMS implementation in a South African company.

Day 2: Quality Management System Requirements and Documentation

Objectives:
• Outline the documentation requirements for a QMS.
• Develop quality manuals, procedures, work instructions, and records.
• Understand the process approach to QMS documentation.
• Apply document control and record management principles.
• Identify legal and regulatory requirements relevant to QMS in South Africa.

• Structure of QMS documentation: pyramid of documents.
• Writing quality policy and quality objectives.
• Developing procedures and work instructions.
• Document control: approval, review, update, and distribution.
• Control of records: identification, storage, protection, retention, and disposition.
• Process mapping and process approach.
• Regulatory compliance: SANS 9001, sector-specific requirements (e.g., construction, manufacturing).
• Practical exercise: Draft a simple procedure.

Day 3: Implementing QMS in Corporate and Project Contexts

Objectives:
• Plan the implementation of a QMS in a corporate environment.
• Apply QMS principles to project management contexts.
• Integrate QMS with existing management systems (e.g., OHS, environmental).
• Develop an implementation roadmap including timelines, resources, and responsibilities.
• Identify barriers to implementation and strategies to overcome them.

Day 4: Monitoring, Measurement, and Continuous Improvement

Objectives:
• Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) for QMS effectiveness.
• Conduct internal audits and management reviews.
• Apply corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
• Use tools for continuous improvement: root cause analysis, Six Sigma, lean.
• Evaluate customer satisfaction and feedback mechanisms.

• Performance measurement: process metrics, product metrics, customer satisfaction.
• Internal audit process: planning, conducting, reporting, and follow-up.
• Management review: inputs, outputs, and decision-making.
• Corrective action vs. preventive action.
• Root cause analysis techniques: 5 Whys, fishbone diagram.
• Continuous improvement methodologies: Kaizen, PDCA, DMAIC.
• Handling nonconformities and customer complaints.
• Practical exercise: Conduct a mock internal audit.

Day 5: Certification, Assessment, and Practical Application

Objectives:
• Understand the certification process for QMS (e.g., ISO 9001 certification).
• Prepare for external audits and surveillance.
• Apply QMS knowledge to real-world corporate and project scenarios.
• Develop an action plan for ongoing QMS maintenance and improvement.
• Complete a summative assessment to demonstrate competence.

• Certification bodies and accreditation in South Africa (SANAS).
• Steps to achieve ISO 9001 certification.
• Preparing for external audits: documentation, evidence, and interviews.
• Maintaining certification: surveillance audits and recertification.
• Case studies: QMS challenges in South African organisations.
• Group project: Present a QMS improvement plan for a case study.
• Summative assessment: Written test and practical demonstration.
• Course wrap-up and action planning.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
