Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, basic understanding of project management concepts is recommended.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Project Scheduling and Resource Management

Objectives:

• Identify key concepts: work breakdown structure, activities, dependencies
• Recognise the importance of resource optimisation
• Differentiate between resource types (human, equipment, materials)
• Outline the project life cycle and scheduling phases

• Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) fundamentals
• Activity definition and sequencing
• Introduction to resource types and constraints
• Project life cycle and scheduling integration

Day 2: Activity Duration Estimation and Network Diagrams

Objectives:
• Estimate activity durations using various techniques
• Construct precedence network diagrams
• Identify dependencies and lead/lag relationships
• Apply critical path method (CPM) basics
• Understand uncertainty in duration estimates

Topics:
• Duration estimation techniques (analogous, parametric, three-point)
• Precedence diagramming method (PDM)
• Dependency types (FS, SS, FF, SF)
• Critical path calculation
• Buffer and contingency planning

Day 3: Resource Allocation and Levelling

Objectives:
• Assign resources to activities based on availability
• Apply resource levelling techniques to resolve overallocation
• Understand resource-driven scheduling
• Use resource calendars and constraints
• Evaluate trade-offs between time and resources

• Resource assignment and calendars
• Resource histograms and usage profiles

Day 4: Schedule Compression and Optimisation Techniques

• Apply crashing and fast-tracking methods
• Analyse cost-time trade-offs
• Optimise schedules using linear programming concepts
• Understand schedule risk and mitigation
• Use software tools for optimisation (basic)

Day 5: Resource Costing and Budgeting

Objectives:
• Estimate resource costs and develop project budgets
• Integrate resource schedules with cost baselines
• Apply earned value management (EVM) basics
• Monitor resource expenditure against budget
• Understand cost performance indices

• Cost baseline and budget development

Day 6: Advanced Scheduling Tools and Software Applications

• Use project management software to create and update schedules
• Set up resources, calendars, and constraints in software
• Perform resource levelling and optimisation using tools
• Generate reports and dashboards for stakeholders
• Integrate with other project management processes

Day 7: Monitoring, Controlling, and Updating Schedules

• Track schedule progress and resource utilisation
• Update schedules with actual data
• Identify variances and implement corrective actions
• Communicate schedule changes to stakeholders
• Apply change control processes

• Progress measurement techniques (% complete, earned value)
• Schedule updates and re-baselining

Day 8: Multi-Project Resource Scheduling and Portfolio Management

• Manage resources across multiple projects
• Prioritise projects and allocate scarce resources
• Apply portfolio management principles
• Use resource capacity planning techniques
• Address resource conflicts in a multi-project environment

Day 9: Integration, Review, and Assessment

Objectives:
• Integrate all scheduling and resource management concepts
• Develop a comprehensive project schedule with optimisation
• Review key learning outcomes and best practices
• Prepare for unit standard assessment
• Complete summative assessment

Practicals

24 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Practical sessions provide hands-on experience with scheduling software and real-world scenarios. Learners will create, optimise, and update schedules, apply resource levelling, and solve multi-project resource conflicts under supervision.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Creating a Project Schedule in MS Project — Learners build a WBS, define activities, estimate durations, and create a network diagram using MS Project. (6h)
  • Practical 2: Resource Levelling and Optimisation — Using a given project scenario, learners identify resource overallocations and apply levelling techniques in software. (6h)
  • Practical 3: Schedule Compression and Cost Analysis — Learners crash and fast-track a project schedule, analyse cost-time trade-offs, and select optimal compression strategies. (6h)
  • Practical 4: Multi-Project Resource Allocation — In a multi-project simulation, learners allocate shared resources, resolve conflicts, and prioritise projects using portfolio management principles. (6h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
