This course equips learners with the skills to rig 3D models for animation and visual effects, enabling characters to move realistically. Participants will master joint placement, skinning, and control systems to support production-ready animation workflows.

Prerequisites

Learners must have basic proficiency in 3D modelling and familiarity with a 3D software package (e.g., Maya, Blender, or 3ds Max).

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to 3D Character Rigging

Objectives:
• Understand the role of rigging in the animation and VFX pipeline
• Identify key components of a character rig
• Navigate the rigging interface of a 3D software package
• Create basic joint hierarchies
• Apply simple skinning and test deformations

Topics:
• Overview of animation and VFX pipeline
• What is rigging: controls, joints, and constraints
• Introduction to 3D software (e.g., Maya, Blender)
• Creating and orienting joints
• Building a simple skeleton hierarchy
• Skinning basics: binding geometry to joints
• Testing deformations with rotate and translate

Day 2: Skeleton and Joint Systems

Objectives:
• Design efficient joint placement for biped characters
• Use IK and FK systems appropriately
• Create control rigs with custom attributes
• Implement constraints for joint behaviour
• Troubleshoot common skeleton issues

Topics:
• Joint placement guidelines for bipeds
• Forward Kinematics (FK) vs Inverse Kinematics (IK)
• IK handle creation and pole vector constraints
• Building FK/IK switching systems
• Custom attribute controls
• Using parent, point, orient, and aim constraints
• Skeleton mirroring and symmetry

Day 3: Skinning and Deformation Techniques

Objectives:
• Apply smooth skinning with weight painting
• Use rigid skinning for mechanical parts
• Edit skin weights with painting tools
• Use corrective blend shapes for deformation
• Optimise skinning for performance

Topics:
• Smooth vs rigid skinning
• Weight painting techniques
• Using influence objects and lattice deformers
• Corrective blend shapes and pose-space deformers
• Skin weight mirroring and normalisation
• Troubleshooting common deformation artefacts
• Performance optimisation: joint limits and binding

Day 4: Advanced Rigging Components

Objectives:
• Implement facial rigging with blend shapes and joints
• Create mechanical rigs for props and vehicles
• Use set-driven keys and expressions for automation
• Build character setup with stretch and squash
• Integrate rig with animation controllers

Topics:
• Facial rigging: blend shapes, joints, and controls
• Mechanical rigging: pistons, wheels, and hinges
• Set-driven keys and driven keys
• Expressions and scripting for automation
• Stretch and squash rig systems
• Animation controllers: selection handles and icons
• Rig validation and testing

Day 5: Integration, Export, and Pipeline

Objectives:
• Package rig for animation and VFX pipeline
• Export rig with proper naming conventions
• Test rig with animation and make adjustments
• Understand rigging for different output formats (film, game)
• Apply best practices for rig maintenance

Topics:
• Rig packaging: clean scene, references, and namespaces
• Export settings for animation and VFX
• Testing rig with walk cycle and basic actions
• Rigging for game engines vs film
• Troubleshooting and debugging rigs
• Pipeline integration: version control and asset management
• Final project: complete a character rig from start to finish

Practicals

Overview

Practical sessions form the core of this course, allowing learners to apply rigging theory hands-on using industry-standard software. Learners will build a complete biped character rig from scratch, including skeleton, controls, skinning, and facial rigging, culminating in a final project that integrates all skills.

Practical Activities
  • Basic Joint Hierarchy and Skinning — Create a simple joint chain for a character arm and apply smooth skinning to a mesh, then test deformations. (4h)
  • IK/FK Switching Rig — Build a complete leg rig with FK and IK controls, including a switch between the two modes using custom attributes. (4h)
  • Weight Painting and Corrective Shapes — Refine skin weights on a character mesh and create corrective blend shapes for problem poses. (4h)
  • Facial Rig and Mechanical Prop Rig — Rig a simple face using blend shapes and joints, and create a mechanical rig for a prop like a wheel or piston. (4h)
  • Final Character Rig Project — Complete a full biped character rig including skeleton, IK/FK arms and legs, spine controls, facial rig, and skinning. Export the rig for animation. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).
