Description

This course equips learners with the knowledge and skills to pack equipment, materials, and tools safely and efficiently. It covers correct packing procedures, handling techniques, and storage requirements to minimise damage and ensure workplace safety. By the end of the course, participants will be able to apply industry-standard packing methods in various operational contexts.

Target Audience

This course is designed for warehouse workers, logistics staff, storekeepers, and any employees responsible for packing, handling, or transporting equipment, materials, and tools in industrial or commercial settings.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment. However, basic literacy and numeracy are recommended.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Packing Procedures and Material Identification

Objectives:
• Understand the importance of proper packing procedures for equipment, materials, and tools.
• Identify different types of packing materials and their appropriate uses.
• Recognize the consequences of improper packing on safety and equipment integrity.
• Interpret relevant legislation and standards (e.g., SAQA, OHS Act).

Topics:
• Overview of course outcomes and unit standard 114508.
• Introduction to packing principles: safety, security, and preservation.
• Types of packing materials: cushioning, barriers, containers, and fasteners.
• Factors influencing material selection: weight, fragility, environment.
• Legal and regulatory requirements for packing in South Africa.
• Case studies: common packing failures and their impacts.

Day 2: Tools and Techniques for Effective Packing

Objectives:
• Select appropriate tools and equipment for packing tasks.
• Demonstrate correct techniques for wrapping, cushioning, and securing items.
• Apply methods to prevent movement and damage during transport.
• Calculate material quantities and optimize packing efficiency.

Topics:
• Overview of packing tools: tape dispensers, cutters, strapping tools, and sealing equipment.
• Techniques for fragile items: cushioning, blocking, and bracing.
• Methods for heavy or irregularly shaped items.
• Moisture and corrosion prevention: desiccants, barrier films, and VCI.
• Hands-on practice: wrapping and securing sample items.
• Material estimation and waste reduction strategies.

Day 3: Procedures for Packing Specialized Equipment and Hazardous Materials

Objectives:
• Identify special requirements for sensitive electronic and mechanical equipment.
• Apply packing procedures for hazardous materials in compliance with regulations.
• Implement labeling, marking, and documentation standards.
• Understand the role of packaging in supply chain logistics.

Topics:
• Packing for electronics: ESD protection, shock/vibration control.
• Packing for precision instruments: climate control and handling precautions.
• Hazardous materials classification and packaging requirements (SANS 10228).
• Labeling, marking, and documentation for transport.
• Logistics considerations: palletization, container loading, and handling.
• Practical exercise: packing a hazardous material sample.

Day 4: Quality Assurance, Troubleshooting, and Final Assessment

Objectives:
• Conduct quality checks and inspections on packed items.
• Identify and resolve common packing problems.
• Develop a packing plan for a complex load.
• Demonstrate competence through practical and written assessments.

Topics:
• Quality control: visual inspection, drop testing, and seal integrity.
• Troubleshooting: addressing damage, material failure, and non-compliance.
• Environmental considerations: sustainable packing and waste management.
• Developing a packing plan: workflow, resource allocation, and timelines.
• Review of course content and question-and-answer session.
• Final practical assessment: pack a mixed consignment.
• Written assessment covering all unit standard outcomes.

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
