Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Professional Dance Forms

Objectives:
• Understand the scope and diversity of professional dance forms. • Identify key historical and cultural contexts of dance. • Recognise the physical and artistic demands of professional dance training. • Establish personal goals and expectations for the course. • Review safety protocols and injury prevention basics.

Topics:
• Overview of professional dance genres (ballet, contemporary, jazz, African, hip-hop). • Historical evolution of dance as a performing art. • The role of the professional dancer in South Africa. • Course structure, assessment criteria, and resources. • Basic anatomy and warm-up principles.

Day 2: Foundational Technique – Alignment and Posture

Objectives:
• Demonstrate correct spinal alignment and pelvic placement. • Apply core engagement for stability and control. • Execute basic pliés and relevés with proper form. • Understand the importance of turnout in classical dance. • Identify common postural deviations and corrections.

Topics:
• Anatomy of the spine and core muscles. • Neutral pelvis and rib cage placement. • Turnout mechanics: external rotation from the hips. • Pliés (demi and grand) and relevés. • Postural assessment and individual corrections.

Day 3: Ballet Fundamentals – Barre Work

Objectives:
• Perform basic barre exercises with correct technique. • Develop strength and flexibility in the feet and ankles. • Understand the purpose of each barre exercise. • Apply proper breathing and port de bras. • Build stamina through structured barre sequences.

Topics:
• Barre etiquette and positioning. • Tendus, dégagés, and rond de jambe à terre. • Frappés and petits battements. • Grands battements and développés. • Stretching and cool-down techniques.

Day 4: Ballet Centre Practice and Turns

Objectives:
• Execute centre combinations with balance and control. • Perform basic turns (pirouettes) from fifth and fourth positions. • Understand spotting technique for turns. • Demonstrate port de bras and épaulement. • Combine steps into a simple enchaînement.

Topics:
• Centre practice: adage and allegro. • Pirouette preparation: positions, plié, and relevé. • Spotting drills and multiple turns. • Port de bras variations. • Simple centre combinations integrating turns.

Day 5: Contemporary Dance – Release and Floor Work

Objectives:
• Apply release technique to improve fluidity of movement. • Execute floor work sequences with control. • Explore weight transfer and momentum. • Develop strength for inversions and rolls. • Integrate breath with movement.

Topics:
• Principles of release technique. • Floor work: rolls, slides, and transitions. • Weight sharing and partnering basics. • Inversions: shoulder stands and handstands. • Breath-initiated movement sequences.

Day 6: Jazz Dance – Isolations and Style

Objectives:
• Perform isolations of head, shoulders, ribcage, and hips. • Execute basic jazz walks and turns. • Understand rhythmic syncopation and musicality. • Apply stylistic elements such as contraction and release. • Combine isolations into a short jazz phrase.

Topics:
• Jazz technique: isolations and alignment. • Jazz walks, chassés, and pas de bourrée. • Pirouettes and jazz turns. • Contraction and release in jazz. • Rhythmic patterns and syncopation exercises.

Day 7: African Dance – Rhythm and Polycentric Movement

Objectives:
• Understand the cultural roots of South African dance forms. • Execute polyrhythmic movements with isolations. • Perform basic steps from Gumboot and Zulu dance. • Develop stamina and ground-based movement quality. • Appreciate the communal and storytelling aspects.

Topics:
• History and significance of African dance in SA. • Polycentric movement: isolating different body parts. • Gumboot dance sequences. • Zulu dance: high kicks and stomps. • Call-and-response rhythmic patterns.

Day 8: Hip-Hop – Groove and Stylisation

Objectives:
• Develop a personal groove and sense of rhythm. • Execute foundational hip-hop moves (bounce, rock, wave). • Understand the elements of popping and locking. • Apply musicality to hip-hop choreography. • Build confidence in freestyle and improvisation.

Topics:
• Hip-hop culture and history. • Groove basics: bounce and rock step. • Popping: hits, waves, and tutting. • Locking: points, locks, and splits. • Freestyle circles and cypher etiquette.

Day 9: Dance Conditioning and Cross-Training

Objectives:
• Design a conditioning routine targeting dance-specific muscles. • Improve cardiovascular endurance for performance. • Apply Pilates and yoga principles for flexibility. • Prevent common dance injuries through strengthening. • Understand periodisation and recovery.

Topics:
• Dance-specific strength: plié, relevé, and jump training. • Core stabilisation exercises. • Flexibility: dynamic and static stretching. • Pilates mat work for dancers. • Injury prevention: RICE and cross-training principles.

Day 10: Performance Skills – Expression and Artistry

Objectives:
• Develop facial expression and emotional connection. • Understand the use of space and dynamics. • Apply projection and stage presence. • Interpret choreography with personal artistry. • Receive and apply constructive feedback.

Topics:
• The performer's mindset: confidence and focus. • Use of levels, directions, and pathways. • Dynamics: tempo, accent, and flow. • Character development and storytelling. • Feedback techniques: self-assessment and peer review.

Day 11: Musicality and Rhythmic Analysis

Objectives:
• Analyse musical structure (phrasing, accents, time signatures). • Sync body movements with music accurately. • Perform across different musical genres. • Use counts and musical cues effectively. • Improvise with rhythmic variations.

Topics:
• Music theory basics for dancers. • Counting music: 4/4, 3/4, 6/8. • Accents and syncopation. • Genre-specific musicality (ballet, jazz, contemporary). • Improvisation exercises with live drumming.

Day 12: Partnering and Ensemble Work

Objectives:
• Execute basic partnering lifts and supports safely. • Develop trust and communication with partners. • Perform in unison and canon with a group. • Understand spatial awareness in ensemble. • Apply weight sharing and counterbalance.

Topics:
• Partnering principles: trust and alignment. • Basic lifts: waist lifts, shoulder sits. • Contact improvisation fundamentals. • Ensemble formations: lines, circles, diagonals. • Canon and round choreography.

Day 13: Choreography Fundamentals

Objectives:
• Understand the choreographic process from concept to execution. • Apply basic choreographic devices (repetition, contrast, variation). • Create a short phrase using given stimuli. • Manipulate space, time, and energy. • Document choreography using notation or video.

Topics:
• Choreographic elements: space, time, energy. • Devices: retrograde, accumulation, fragmentation. • Stimuli: music, text, visual art, emotion. • Structured improvisation for creation. • Labanotation basics or video documentation.

Day 14: Rehearsal Techniques and Professional Etiquette

Objectives:
• Understand the structure of professional rehearsals. • Apply efficient learning and memorisation strategies. • Demonstrate professionalism: punctuality, respect, focus. • Use feedback to refine performance. • Manage performance anxiety.

Topics:
• Rehearsal etiquette: arriving prepared, taking notes. • Learning choreography quickly: chunking and repetition. • Marking versus full-out practice. • Giving and receiving constructive criticism. • Performance anxiety: breathing and visualisation.

Day 15: Costume, Makeup, and Stagecraft

Objectives:
• Understand the role of costume and makeup in performance. • Apply stage makeup techniques for different genres. • Handle costumes and quick changes efficiently. • Understand basic lighting and staging concepts. • Prepare for technical rehearsals.

Topics:
• Costume design and function for dance. • Stage makeup: foundation, eyes, lips. • Special effects: sweat-proofing, character makeup. • Quick-change techniques. • Stage layout: wings, backstage, and lighting cues.

Day 16: Audition Preparation and Career Pathways

Objectives:
• Prepare a professional dance CV and headshot. • Understand audition formats and expectations. • Perform a mock audition with confidence. • Learn how to network in the industry. • Identify further training and job opportunities.

• Creating a dance CV and portfolio. • Headshots and showreel basics. • Audition types: open calls, invited, video. • Mock audition: learn a phrase and perform. • Networking: social media, workshops, agencies.

Day 17: Repertoire and Style Immersion

Objectives:
• Learn a repertoire piece from a professional work. • Analyse the stylistic nuances of the choreographer. • Perform with attention to detail and authenticity. • Adapt personal technique to the required style. • Discuss the historical and cultural context of the work.

Topics:
• Repertoire selection: classical or contemporary excerpt. • Stylistic analysis: movement quality, dynamics. • Learning and polishing the piece. • Context: choreographer's background and intent. • Performance practice and interpretation.

Day 18: Collaboration with Live Musicians

Objectives:
• Work collaboratively with musicians in real time. • Adapt movement to live music variations. • Understand the interplay between dance and music. • Improvise within a musical structure. • Create a short duet with a musician.

Topics:
• Communication between dancer and musician. • Live music cues and flexibility. • Improvisation with rhythm and melody. • Composing a short collaborative piece. • Rehearsal and performance with live accompaniment.

Day 19: Full Rehearsal and Feedback Session

Objectives:
• Run a full rehearsal of the culminating performance. • Incorporate feedback from instructors and peers. • Refine technical and artistic aspects. • Build endurance for full-length performance. • Develop a performance mindset.

Topics:
• Full run-through of repertoire and original work. • Technical adjustments and corrections. • Artistic refinement: dynamics, expression. • Feedback session: strengths and areas for growth. • Mental preparation and focus strategies.

Day 20: Culminating Performance and Reflection

Objectives:
• Perform the culminating work for an audience. • Demonstrate professionalism and stage presence. • Reflect on personal growth and learning outcomes. • Receive formal assessment and feedback. • Create a personal development plan for future training.

Topics:
• Warm-up and preparation routine. • Final performance: repertoire and original choreography. • Audience etiquette and bowing. • Self-reflection and peer discussion. • Certification and next steps in dance career.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
