None — open enrollment. A basic understanding of golf rules and terminology is helpful but not required.

Course Outline

Day 1: Introduction to Sport Psychology and Golf

Objectives:
• Define sport psychology and its relevance to golf performance.
• Identify key psychological factors influencing golf (e.g., focus, confidence, anxiety).
• Explain the relationship between mental skills and consistent golf performance.
• Outline the structure and expectations of the course.

• The mental demands of golf: concentration, emotional control, resilience.
• Overview of psychological skills training (PST).
• The role of the coach and player in mental skill development.
• Ethical considerations in sport psychology.
• Introduction to self-assessment tools for mental skills.

Day 2: Goal Setting for Golf Performance

Objectives:
• Distinguish between outcome, performance, and process goals.
• Apply the SMART principle to golf-specific goals.
• Develop a personal goal-setting plan for practice and competition.
• Evaluate goal achievement and adjust strategies accordingly.

Topics:
• Types of goals: outcome vs. performance vs. process.
• SMART goal framework (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound).
• Goal setting for short-term and long-term golf improvement.
• Writing effective golf goals: examples for driving, putting, course management.
• Monitoring progress: journals, feedback, and review.
• Common pitfalls in goal setting and how to avoid them.

Day 3: Arousal Regulation and Anxiety Management

Objectives:
• Explain the inverted-U hypothesis and its application to golf.
• Identify symptoms of high arousal and anxiety in golf contexts.
• Apply relaxation techniques (e.g., breathing, progressive muscle relaxation).
• Use activation techniques to achieve optimal arousal levels.

• Understanding arousal, anxiety, and stress in golf.
• The inverted-U model: optimal arousal for putting vs. driving.
• Cognitive and somatic anxiety: signs and effects.
• Relaxation techniques: diaphragmatic breathing, PMR, imagery.
• Activation techniques: energising cues, pre-round routines.
• Developing a personal arousal regulation plan.

Day 4: Concentration and Focus in Golf

Objectives:
• Define concentration and its components (selective attention, sustained focus).
• Identify internal and external distractions on the golf course.
• Apply attentional focusing techniques (e.g., pre-shot routine, cue words).
• Develop strategies to refocus after a poor shot.

Topics:
• The nature of concentration in golf.
• Types of attention: broad, narrow, internal, external.
• Common distractions: crowd noise, weather, self-talk.
• Pre-shot routine: steps to enhance focus.
• Cue words and triggers for maintaining concentration.
• Refocusing strategies: breathing, resetting, positive self-talk.
• Simulation exercises for focus under pressure.

Day 5: Imagery and Mental Rehearsal for Golf

Objectives:
• Describe the principles of effective imagery (vividness, controllability).
• Use imagery to improve technique, strategy, and emotional control.
• Develop a personalised imagery script for a golf scenario.
• Integrate imagery into practice and pre-competition routines.

Topics:
• What is imagery? Modalities: visual, kinesthetic, auditory.
• The PETTLEP model (Physical, Environment, Task, Timing, Learning, Emotion, Perspective).
• Imagery for skill execution: swing, putting, chip shots.
• Imagery for course management and problem-solving.
• Emotional and arousal regulation through imagery.
• Creating and using imagery scripts.
• Practical session: guided imagery on the practice range.

Day 6: Self-Confidence and Self-Talk

Objectives:
• Explain the sources of self-confidence in golf (e.g., mastery, social support).
• Identify negative self-talk patterns and their impact on performance.
• Apply cognitive restructuring to replace negative with positive self-talk.
• Build a personal self-talk plan for competition.

Topics:
• Self-efficacy theory and golf performance.
• Sources of confidence: performance accomplishments, vicarious experience, verbal persuasion, physiological states.
• Identifying negative self-talk: catastrophising, overgeneralisation.
• Cognitive restructuring techniques.
• Developing positive self-talk statements and affirmations.
• Pre-round and in-round self-talk strategies.
• Building confidence through success logs and strengths focus.

Day 7: Team Dynamics and Communication in Golf

Objectives:
• Understand the role of the support team (coach, caddie, family) in golf.
• Apply effective communication skills with caddie and coach.
• Manage interpersonal relationships and conflict in golf settings.
• Develop strategies for effective teamwork in team golf events.

Topics:
• The golf support network: roles and responsibilities.
• Communication models: sender-receiver, active listening.
• Giving and receiving feedback effectively.
• Building rapport with caddie and coach.
• Conflict resolution strategies.
• Team cohesion in fourball and team competitions.
• Leadership and followership in golf teams.
• Practical exercise: role-play communication scenarios.

Day 8: Mental Toughness and Resilience

Objectives:
• Define mental toughness and its components (commitment, control, challenge, confidence).
• Apply strategies to cope with adversity and pressure in golf.
• Develop a personal resilience plan for handling setbacks.
• Use post-round reflection to enhance mental toughness.

Topics:
• The 4 C's of mental toughness: Control, Commitment, Challenge, Confidence.
• Coping with pressure: routines, breathing, perspective.
• Handling mistakes and bad rounds: reframing and learning.
• Building resilience through adversity simulation.
• Post-round debrief: analysing mental performance.
• Developing a mental toughness training plan.
• Case studies of mentally tough golfers.

Day 9: Integration, Assessment, and Action Plan

Objectives:
• Synthesise all psychological skills into a comprehensive mental game plan.
• Demonstrate application of sport psychology concepts in a simulated golf scenario.
• Assess personal mental strengths and areas for development.
• Create a 30-day action plan for ongoing mental skills training.

Topics:
• Review of key concepts from Days 1-8.
• Building a personalised mental game plan: routines, goals, self-talk, imagery.
• Simulation exercise: 9-hole round with mental skills application.
• Peer and facilitator feedback on mental skills use.
• Self-assessment of mental skills progress.
• Designing a 30-day practice plan for continued improvement.
• Resources for further learning (books, apps, associations).
• Course evaluation and certification.

Practicals

No practicals for this training.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).
