Description

This course equips education professionals with the knowledge and skills to support curriculum access for all learners, including those with barriers to learning. Participants will learn to identify and address diverse learning needs, adapt teaching methods, and create inclusive learning environments that promote equitable access to the curriculum.

This course is designed for teachers, trainers, facilitators, and education support staff working in schools, training centres, or adult education settings who seek to enhance inclusive practices.

Course Outline

Day 1: Foundations of Inclusive Education

Objectives:
• Define inclusive education and its legislative framework in South Africa.
• Identify barriers to learning and participation in diverse classrooms.
• Explain the role of the curriculum in promoting or hindering inclusion.
• Describe the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL).
• Recognize the importance of collaboration with stakeholders.

• Overview of inclusive education: policies and principles
• South African legal framework: White Paper 6, SA Schools Act
• Barriers to learning: physical, social, pedagogical, systemic
• Introduction to Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
• Roles of teachers, support staff, and families
• Case studies of inclusive practices

Day 2: Understanding Learner Diversity

Objectives:
• Identify different types of learning needs and disabilities.
• Analyze the impact of socio-economic and cultural factors on learning.
• Apply a strengths-based approach to learner profiling.
• Use observation and assessment tools to identify support needs.
• Develop empathy and positive attitudes towards diversity.

• Categories of learning needs: physical, sensory, intellectual, emotional
• Impact of poverty, language, and culture on access
• Strengths-based vs deficit-based perspectives
• Observation techniques and informal assessment
• Building inclusive classroom culture
• Case studies on learner diversity

Day 3: Curriculum Differentiation and Adaptations

Objectives:
• Differentiate between accommodation, modification, and adaptation.
• Apply strategies to differentiate content, process, product, and environment.
• Design flexible learning activities using UDL guidelines.
• Create individualized support plans within the curriculum.
• Use assistive technology to enhance access.

• Levels of curriculum adaptation: accommodation vs modification
• Differentiating instruction: content, process, product, learning environment
• UDL guidelines in practice: multiple means of representation, action/expression, engagement
• Developing Individual Support Plans (ISPs)
• Assistive technology overview: low-tech to high-tech
• Practical session: adapting a lesson plan

Day 4: Assessment for Inclusive Learning

Objectives:
• Distinguish between formative, summative, and diagnostic assessment in inclusive contexts.
• Design alternative assessment methods that accommodate diverse learners.
• Use assessment data to inform curriculum adjustments.
• Apply principles of fair assessment and reasonable accommodation.
• Collaborate with learners and parents in assessment processes.

• Types of assessment and their inclusive applications
• Alternative assessment: portfolios, observations, performance tasks
• Reasonable accommodations in assessments
• Using assessment data for curriculum decision-making
• Learner self-assessment and peer assessment
• Case studies on inclusive assessment practices

Day 5: Creating an Inclusive Learning Environment

Objectives:
• Arrange physical and social spaces to support all learners.
• Implement positive behavior support strategies.
• Foster a sense of belonging and community in the classroom.
• Use cooperative learning and peer support structures.
• Address challenging behaviors through inclusive approaches.

• Classroom layout and accessibility
• Positive Behavior Support (PBS) and restorative practices
• Building classroom community: circle time, class meetings
• Cooperative learning structures for diverse groups
• Peer tutoring and buddy systems
• Managing challenging behavior inclusively

Day 6: Collaboration and Co-Teaching

Objectives:
• Identify roles and responsibilities of support teams in inclusive settings.
• Implement effective co-teaching models (e.g., station teaching, parallel teaching).
• Communicate effectively with parents, specialists, and community partners.
• Develop collaborative IEP/ISP review processes.
• Advocate for resources and support within the school system.

• Multi-disciplinary team roles: therapists, psychologists, social workers
• Co-teaching models and their implementation
• Effective communication strategies with stakeholders

Day 7: Integration, Reflection, and Action Planning

Objectives:
• Synthesize all course concepts into a cohesive inclusive practice framework.
• Develop a personal action plan for implementing inclusive strategies.
• Evaluate the impact of inclusive practices on learner outcomes.
• Reflect on personal attitudes and professional growth.
• Present a portfolio of inclusive lesson adaptations.

This course is made up of exercises and case studies delivered alongside the theory — no separate practical sessions are required to complete it.

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course and a final summative test at the end.

Daily Exercises — 30%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 30% to the final total.

Final Test — 70%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 70% to the overall mark.

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Daily Average 30% + Final Test 70%).

  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.

  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
