SAQA US 257197 | NQF 3 | Credits 6 | Duration 3 Days
From $713 per delegate

Description

This course equips laboratory personnel with the knowledge and skills to safely and correctly handle, transport, store, and process biological specimens in a haematology laboratory. It ensures compliance with standard operating procedures and quality assurance requirements, minimizing risks to staff and patients.

Learning Outcomes

  • Apply standard precautions and infection control measures when handling biological specimens.
  • Demonstrate correct procedures for receiving, labelling, and storing haematology specimens.
  • Evaluate specimen quality and identify factors that may compromise test results.
  • Implement proper transport and disposal protocols for biological specimens.
  • Apply relevant health and safety legislation and laboratory policies.
  • Analyze documentation and record-keeping requirements for specimen traceability.

Target Audience

This course is designed for laboratory technicians, technologists, and assistants working in haematology laboratories who are responsible for specimen handling.

Prerequisites

None — open enrollment.

Day 1: Introduction to Biological Specimen Handling and Safety

Objectives:
• Define key terms related to haematology specimen handling
• Explain the importance of proper specimen collection and handling
• Identify safety protocols and infection control measures
• Describe the chain of custody for biological specimens
• Outline the legal and ethical considerations in specimen handling

Topics:
• Overview of haematology and biological specimen types
• Principles of specimen collection: venipuncture, capillary sampling
• Safety precautions: PPE, biohazard waste disposal
• Infection control and prevention of cross-contamination
• Legal and ethical frameworks: confidentiality, consent
• Documentation and labelling requirements
• Chain of custody procedures
• Introduction to quality assurance in specimen handling

Day 2: Specimen Processing, Storage, and Transport

Objectives:
• Describe correct procedures for processing haematology specimens
• Explain storage requirements for different specimen types
• Demonstrate proper transport protocols to maintain specimen integrity
• Identify factors affecting specimen quality and stability
• Apply troubleshooting techniques for common handling errors

Topics:
• Processing techniques: centrifugation, aliquoting, separation
• Specimen storage conditions: temperature, light, time limits
• Transport logistics: packaging, temperature control, courier procedures
• Factors affecting specimen integrity: haemolysis, clotting, contamination
• Common errors in handling and corrective actions
• Quality control checks during processing and transport
• Documentation for processing and transport logs
• Regulatory requirements for specimen transport

Day 3: Advanced Applications and Practical Integration

Objectives:
• Apply knowledge to special specimen types (e.g., paediatric, geriatric)
• Evaluate case studies to identify handling errors and solutions
• Interpret quality control data to ensure specimen suitability
• Demonstrate competency in handling specimens for specialised tests
• Integrate all aspects of specimen handling into a standard operating procedure

Topics:
• Special considerations for challenging populations
• Handling specimens for coagulation, cytogenetics, molecular tests
• Case studies: troubleshooting specimen rejection and recollection
• Quality indicators and continuous improvement
• Developing and reviewing standard operating procedures
• Audit and inspection preparation for specimen handling
• Emerging technologies in specimen management
• Final assessment and feedback

Practicals

12 hours of practicals To be conducted online or on-campus or in-house
Overview

Hands-on practical sessions are essential for learners to develop proficiency in specimen collection, processing, and transport. These sessions reinforce theoretical knowledge and ensure competency in safe handling practices.

Practical Activities
  • Practical 1: Venipuncture and Capillary Sampling — Learners perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection on mannequins or simulated arms, following correct procedures. (4h)
  • Practical 2: Specimen Processing and Storage — Learners process whole blood specimens: centrifugation, aliquoting, and storing under appropriate conditions. (4h)
  • Practical 3: Packaging and Transport of Specimens — Learners package specimens for transport following regulatory guidelines, including triple packaging and temperature control. (4h)

Summatives

Each delegate is assessed continuously throughout the course via daily exercises, scored practical assignments, and a final summative test at the end.

Practical Assignments — 30%

Practical assignments are observed and scored against a rubric during the practical sessions. Each delegate's practical mark is averaged into a single 100% score and contributes 30% to the final total.

Daily Exercises — 20%

Every training day ends with a multiple-choice exercise scored out of 100%. The scores from each daily exercise are averaged across the duration of the course to produce a Daily Average mark, which contributes 20% to the final total.

Final Test — 50%

On the last day a final summative test is written. It is a multiple-choice paper with multiple-answer questions: each question may have more than one correct option, and a single wrong selection on a question marks the entire question wrong — no partial credit. The final test is scored out of 100% and contributes 50% to the overall mark.

Final Total
Component Out of Weight
Practical Assignments (rubric-scored) 100% 30%
Daily Average (multiple choice) 100% 20%
Final Test (multi-answer multiple choice) 100% 50%
Final Total 100%

All marks are recorded on the AATICD LMS and visible to each learner under their account.

Certificate

Certificate of Completion

Awarded to delegates who achieve an overall mark of 50% or higher on the Final Total (Practicals 30% + Daily Average 20% + Final Test 50%).

How it works
  • Certificates are auto-generated on the AATICD LMS as soon as the marks pass the 50% threshold.
  • Each certificate is a branded PDF with the delegate's name, the course title, the unit standard ID, NQF level, credits, and the date of issue.
  • You can download or print your certificate from your LMS dashboard at any time after issue — there's no reissue fee and no expiry date.
  • If you scored under 50% you can sit the final test again at the next scheduled session at no extra cost.
Where to find it

Sign in to the LMS, open your dashboard, and your certificates appear under My Certificates. Each entry has a View / Download button and a print option.
